Hornady Superformance Ammo coming for .223 ARs

O.K I read the article and for $17 plus per 20 I'll keep loading my own Super rounds! I don't know many folk sporting a 24" barrel AR's!!! And I will not be one of them! I can run 50 gr SEI's at 3264 fps out of my AR for less then $.15 a round! Thanks but no thanks Hornaday!

454 Puma, I think I'm with you on this one.. When I'm shooting PDs, I'd have to take out a second mortgage to pay for the rounds I would be using in a normal trip..

If Prairie Dogs were a more formidable target that was life threatening, then a few pounds of energy might be worth the cost....

I've seen very few that were over 300 yards that I didn't have to 'walk' my shots into, regardless of the barrel length and caliber...and I consider myself a fair shot at small targets...I couldn't afford to miss at that cost and I doubt that the effect at the end would be much different than what I'm using now..

$0.85 per round, compared to the $0.30 per round cost of my reloads is a solid clincher when you are talking about taking 1.000 rounds for a shoot....I just don't see that much additional benefit..

I'm sure there might be some 'newbies' that will fall for it though...

I just want them to sell the bullets with a BC of .290 for a 53gr would kick A$$. Not to mention whenever Hodgdon starts to sell the Hornady powder we can have some fun. Well that is if they both do as they say they will do....

1. The high BC of the new 53gr Vmax will show the same benefit in both regular 223 ammo and super performance ammo in terms of superior windage, less drop, and retained velocity.

2. Advertised velocity claims are generally exadurated and very few actual shooters will actually get those velocities.

3. Test barrel was 24" on an AR, which is not a very common barrel length. For a strictly varmint rifle, maybe. But most AR owners use far shorter barrels, which will decrease the velocity.

Summary: Hornady has produced a new 223 53gr Vmax bullet that is much more "aerodynamic" than other bullets in it's class. Cool! It's being loaded in a new breed of factory loaded ammo and marketed as nearly equal to a 22-250, which it's not really.

I am not impressed by Hornadys marketing of it being on par with a 22-250 myself. Really now what p-dog shooter is going to buy 2000 rounds of this ammo to pop off varmints when our own handloads already out perform their statistics in most cases.
I laughed when I read that AR & other shooters have little confidence when shooting past 300 yds with a .223....
