in a few weeks i'll pick up a redbone hound male. he's 4 weeks now. but paid for.
my question is what are the first things i can do to train him to hunt cats and bears in idaho?
i'll be getting two more dogs soon.

keep it out of trouble , don't let him hurt his ego , let him mature.worm, vacinate, good feed and good housing.take him for rides, put a lead and walk him , tie him out on chain some if kennel kept, play with hide drag it ,hang it up. than start with smaller animals like coon so he can learn without getting hurt real bad so he will learn repect for the critter and how to handle it.

Teach your puppy to handle good. Basic obediance--come when called, load, lead etc. You have to realize that not every puppy is going to make a great hunting hound but an easy-handleing hound will stop a lot of the aggrevation.

I don't like fooling with puppies and I'll tell you why. I handle a lot of hounds and it don't cost anymore to feed a good one than it does a sorry one. If a man is going to raise a pack of good dogs you are going to have to cull one occasionaly. I tend to cull pretty severe. I get too attatched emotionaly to a dog I've raised from a puppy. A hound is generally at least a year and maybe 2 before you know what you got.

I believe a good hound is born not made. Thats been my experience, just my opionion. Tree, Grit and Trail are born in and I don't think there is much you can do to help a hound that just doesn't have it. Lord knows I've really messed up really badly--through ignorance or hard-headedness, and it just don't seem to matter on a good hound.

Still and all--ain't nothing makes me smile like a young man and a speckled pup.--Take your dog hunting--he'll teach you how to be a hunter.

PS--my best dog was a redbone. Got a protrait of him hanging on the living room wall.

kka--turn the guy before he starts. True much easier to buy a broke hound then a pup but someone had to break or train it. One pick a pup from good breeding, two pick one that is out going don't just sit in corner or hide.True all hounds don't make the best but if you start it right it will stand a better chance. I like the rewards of breaking and training my own. If nobody worked with a pup there wouldn't be many finished hounds.

Hellhound, where are you getting your Redbone from?? I just had a female flown in from Wis. She is 12 weeks old and full of energy. She treed two cats a couple of days ago, I got a great photo of it. I have two blueticks and this little Redbone. My bluetick pup took first place in a Puppy Water Race last Sunday in MT at a Field Trial, what a blast. I live near Cheney, WA, how far are you from this side of the state?? I would HIGHLY reccommend a book called "Dog Talk". It is written by Tom Solberg who has a very successful Redbone Kennel in Wis. If you go to Yahoo and check the search mode and look for T-Top Redbones you'll be able to find his book and look at some great photos. Talk to you later. Fred

HELLHOUND, The book Machias mentioned can be purchased (downloaded or mailed) from www.dogtalkprogram.com/ very informative for any level houndsman.

Machias, Amazing your red was treeing at 12wks, thats super!
Just a friendly piece of advice though, cats can be bad news on young pups if they decide to turn and fight. Hate to see em lose an eye...

Howdy NiteFright, I know exactly what your saying. I would never let the grey cat near the pup or visa versa. For some reason the orange tabby cat "LOVES" to be mauled. I don't know why. I only release the pup when the cats are running up the tree. If I could figure out how to post a photo I would. I'll try. Thanks for the words of advice.

Machias,

Two cats one tree, pretty darn good for his age!

Looks like your pup's gonna be a heck of cat dog!
Love the pictures /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif . I gotta figure out how to post em my self. I have some nice ones.

Boy I always wanted a bluedog w/Cameron lines, you got me a bit green w/envy /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Well ya know I will be having a litter in about 65 days or so....Dad's all Smokey River ( actually a very impressive pedigree) and since papers don't tree game, he's one heck of a lion and bear hound. I could ship you one?!? Fred
