Really do enjoy this section of the forum , I dont run hounds , but I admire the work you ladies & gentlemen do . Sure would like to see lion season open in CA . Some people have hangups on useing dogs to hunt , I have hangups about people never giving their dogs a chance to fetch more than a Frizbee . Though I may never run dogs you have my support to keep running yours .

Thank You CLL
it is alot of time and money working a pack of hounds but the pay off at the end is worth evry bit of it!!

Thanks for your words of support CLL. Running hounds is an absoult blast, and tons of work to get a decent pack. I don't have much of a coyote population and could sure use a foot of snow to help locate some. Two winters in a row with no snow really sucks!!

Thanks for the support, mostly coon hunt with my hounds, but I know how much time effort and money it takes to making a decent hound. Believe it or not I just bought a Kerosene heater to keep my hounds fairly warm, 22 below last week and right now its only about 12.

-31 here at 7PM--just checked my hounds--they snug--I bury my dog houses in snow--put some extry bacon fat on dry dog food--they fine. If I bring 'em in even for one night then I gotta keep on doing it--learned that long ago.

One thing that will keep weight on a hound better than any other thing I know (besides not running) is a beaver. If you have access to them they are a heck of a food source and the dogs really seem to like the flavor. Meat is real rich and the tail is all fat. Used to get mine from the trappers. A buddy had a hound that he claimed would never be fat. It was a good runner but always out of gas after a couple of days. I brought him 4 beavers and you would not believe the energy it put in that dog. Now he swears by the beaver as a great food source.

One walker of mine is real racey, high enengy dog and hard to keep weight on. When it's cold I feed twice a day instead of just once, mix dry food with warm water and use bacon fat or rendered bear fat 1/4 cup a day, when running hard. I think the warm water helps em digest better in the cold. Plus they don't seem to mind the warm meal lol.

Hey CLL, I thank you for the nice words. I have seen several people on this site that just hate when we talk about hound hunting. Makes me mad, but I live with it. (won't mention any names) Just because its hounds running a predator doesn't make it easy by any means. If you anti-houndspeople think it is easy, I would like you to just try an hour of what the hounds have to go through, and then maybe make your judgement. Just my opinion, thanks again CLL!! It sounds awsome, keep it up. Even though there are those who consider it wrong. Ive never seen it in action, but I can imagine it is exciting. Ive helped on bear hunts with hounds and it gets the blood pumping, especially when they circle around, and you hear the bear, and dogs coming staight for you! You almost need a change of pants! Very exciting stuff hunting with hounds! Keep it up!!

Good luck!
