How about the 6.5mm Remington Mag?

Well, we've established that a .257 Roberts AI isn't the best option for rebarreling a Ruger M77MKII already chambered in .22-250. So now I'm expanding the search past the quarter-bores and I discovered the 6.5mm Rem Mag. I'm thinking it may fit the bill nicely for a long range deer rifle.

Anybody have one? Will this fit the bolt face and action I already have?

Here's the rifle I want to put the barrel on.

Might fit the action, but it's got the same bolt face as a 300 Winchester mag, also the same cartridge body diameter. You'd have to have the bolt face opened up.

You might consider the 6.5 by 284. Norma makes brass and it's got a rebated rim the same diameter as the 243, 308, 30-06. Case diameter is the same as the 300-7mm mag. Lots of thousand yard bench rest shooters really like it.

Please read up on the 6.5 Rem Mag and the 6.5x284 - both are not nice to barrels.

May I recommmend a 6.5x55 or 6.5x55 AI running 140 or 142 grain bullets?

For a quick comparison, check www.hornady.com for the ballistics comparison. Remember, ALL of the loads you see published for 6.5x55's are designed for the lower pressure M94 and M96 Swedish Mauser actions. In a modern action, 2800 to 2900+ is relatively easy to obtain when using a modern actions.

while your at it check out the 264 win mag. Ive looked at it with the naked eye, and it almost appears to be a 7mm mag fitted with a 264.

The bolt face and action rails can be opened up to accept a short, fat cartridge; even one with a magnum bolt head diameter.

Several of the cartridges mentioned, like the 6.5-06 and the 264 Win Mag, won't fit in the action due to excessive cartridge length in a short action Ruger originally designed for the 22-250.

I have a 6.5 Rem mag in a 673 Remington and I love this little rifle. I was shooting it Friday and 3 bullets touching at 100 yds was commonplace. I have quite a few deer rifles and this one will be with me opening day. I have had 264 Win mags, 260's and 6.5 jdjs and I think this one is my favorite. I had thought about having the barrel replaced to get rid of the vent rib....but after shooting it Fri I'm not messing with it....129 gr Hornady's shot the best...with IMR 4350 powder. Robbie

The 6.5 Rem mag & 260 were designed to work in a short action like the 700 SA. The 6.5 x55 and 284 were designed for slighty longer actions. Specs on the Swed 3.03 oal, 284 2.95. The 700 SA has a magazine lenght of only 2.85. Other (Short Actions) are slightly longer. Make sure the cartridge you choose will work through your magazine or you'll end up with a single shot or having to seat hunting weight bullets real deep. Of the cartriges mentioned the 260 or 260AI would require no bolt face alteration and would allow you to use Lapua brass, either 308 necked down or 243 necked up.

if you like the 6.5 mag, go for it, one of the original short mags, just get an 8 twist barrel to shoot the 140's on down. don't worry about barrel life, it should be a lifetime of hunting with proper care. basicly its a 6.5/06 on a short action. throat it for the longest bullet you plan on shooting set at mag length and enjoy!

To answer your queston re fit your bolt face and action
i would say look at a 260 rem or 260 rem AI or a 25-308 wildcat........ I think it is called a 25 souper....
look up rocky raab....

or a 7mm-08

or for something for a nice deer rifle...... 250 savage or 250 AI savage...... parent case for your 22-250...... is a nice round.....

+1 That is what I was trying to say when I recommend the .260 or .260AI.

I had a 6.5-06 and can tell you it is an outstanding big game cartridge! When I had it I took deer, pronghorn, bear, elk, coyotes and never had an issue or wanted anything else. The .260AI will give similar results in a short action. You will not need to change the bolt face as stated above if you go with any case based on the .308. Good luck

Thanks guys--My ideas keep getting shot down, but I'm getting closer. This is the 2nd time the .250 Savage has come up, so now it's basically between the .250 Savage and the .260 Remington and their AI versions...

Any suggestions on who makes a good barrel?

I still vote for the 260AI but if you want a 25 cal in a short action look at the .250 Savage AI or 25-308. Below is a piece from another website

A reference to P.O. Ackley is in order at this point. When Parker Otto was doing his famous experiments, he reported that his best creation was the .250 Savage Improved. That round showed the most improvement and produced the greatest efficiency of all his projects. Ackley firmly stated it was the optimum case size for the .257 bore. The .250 Savage Improved has a case capacity of 50 grains of water, measured to the base of the neck. The .25-308 is therefore identical in case capacity, and should duplicate the .250 Savage Improved on which P.O. Ackley so rightly doted. He liked the Souper, too!

Don't forget about Pac-Nor barrels.

Looked at quality of available brass yet? Cost of quality available brass?

Have studied this over the past 1.5 years....my 6.5x55 AI reamer will be here Wed or Thursday. Lapua brass is on the way as well. Plan on 1000 yard prairie dogs in the spring. SPLAT! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
