How could I make a sun shade for my scope

I am wanting to make a sun shade for my 3-9x50mm simmons and I was wondering what to use.I read a post that some one used an oragano bottle so I was thinking I would use one of those big seasoning bottles what do you think?

I made one from an aerosol can for a Bushnell Legend. First I cut both ends off and smoothed the edges with a file and emery cloth. Roughed it up with sandpaper, primed and painted it flat black inside and out. Then I took some adhesive-backed felt strip and put a strip around the inside of one end. With the felt it fit snug on the scope without scratching it. The trick will be to find the right size can to fit the scope objective.

Ive used a 2 liter bottle with top and bottom cut out and slit down the side. Just wrap it around the objective and put a piece of tape on it. Slip it off and wrap the whole shebang with black duct tape and your good to go.

Otherwise A couple guys that shoot at the same range I do use these, and seem to like them.

Hope that helped some.

If you're looking for a "tube-type" shade (as opposed to "screen type") you can make a field expedient shade out of slightly undersized Rubatex pipe insulation. Not the best fix in the world, but it does work.

Linefinder,
ya got me thinking when you brought up pipe insulation because i started thinking of PVC spray paint it black or camo but what size should I make it?
6 or 8 inches be long enough? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

6" is plenty. Keep in mind, if the material you are using has much weight to it, don't make it too long. The inertia from an overweight, overly long shade can cause scopes to go wonky.

For a quick sunshade, I just roll up some target paper and tape it to the objective bell. You can make them as long as you wamt. For my target 22 Rimfire rifles, I make them as long as the barrel, to keep the barrel generated heat waves (mirage) from interfering with the view thru the scope.
