How do coyotes react to warmer weather?

Since spring is almost here, I was wondering if you change your tactics for coyotes? Will they still respond in the day?

Hi SRS...

Beings as how no one has responded to the topic in the Electronics forum, I will move it over to the Predator Hunting forum and see how it does there for ya... Good luck!!

For my input on your question...

As for changing tactics, No, the only thing different I do is my clothing, I wear less of it... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

And yes, Coyotes will respond during the daylight hours in the Spring, or at least they have for me...

Call and they will come, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif ,but can you stand the hot weather, around here, its starting to get hot.

we don't start getting real hot weather until june. I was curious if the warm weather makes them lazy, or if they are still active throughout the day.

I called three trips during the summer and spring in WY , it was 90-100 degrees in the afternoon. I found there were no responses after 10:00 am. Then I would go back out about supper time, when it started to cool some. By 10-11am it was 85-90 degrees, it was tough on me and the dog. I would assume the coyote felt the same, stay in the shade and wait to eat later.T.20

Everybody always complains that when it's warm out the coyotes have such an easy time finding food that they don't respond well to calling. I've heard people say, "wish it was colder, make em hunt up the sound a little bit more." Generally the people who I hear say this, kill very few if any coyotes. It's been my experience that yotes are most succeptable to calling immediately preceeding, or following a really cold snap. Reguardless of the tempurature, if it is significantly warmer than it has been coyotes are more active in my opinion. (unless your talking about extreme heat, in which case I have no experience calling in).If its been -20 every night for the past week, and today it's 10 above with lows hovering around 0, it's an opportune time to kill dogs. Today it was fifty some degrees in Fargo, The past two months it's been below zero almost everynight, and sometimes never above zero during the day. I wish I would have been out today. I guarantee you that people are not the only ones glad to see the warm up, and I think coyotes would have been fun to call today. Just my theory. To me an ideal day is 36 degrees, overcast with a cold front moving in, NW winds 3-5 mph, one inch of fresh snow on the ground, and a mouth full of copenhagen long cut.

As spring progresses I start to use alot of pup whines. Seems to work. Even if they haven't had pups yet the maternal instinct kicks in and they come rolling. I haven't had much luck with distress calls in my area once spring hits. Once I start finding grasshopper parts and plant material in scat I pretty much give up for the year.

do any of you use a fawn distress call? I was using one last spring and called deer and fox in a few times, should work on coyotes right? My work usually has me busy in the spring and fall so I have to hunt when I can. Thanks for your help so far. Shane
