How do you carry your AR on an ATV?

Finally got an ATV. Honda Rancher 4x4. My Bushmaster Varminter will not fit in a Kolpin gun boot. It definatly needs to be in an enclosed case, its very dusty here. Any advice appreciated. Thanks, Roy

I use the Plano gun case for air travel, it is bolted to the side of the front tool box on my Rubicon. It is black and plastic, hinged top, easy to flip open and unstrap the rifle, I use some padding just to make sure it doesn't rattle inside of it.T.20

How do you like that Rubicon? How many miles do you have on it. There is a guy that runs them on oil rig checks that has an ungodly amount of miles on them. Haven't heard about his repair record though.

I have a 2 gun rack on my Big Bear's handlebars. One of the gun holders is used to carry my AR. In the other holder, a short 2X4 board with a V sawed in the center is used for a rifle rest when shooting groundhogs or other pests that I run up on while riding.

I just use an Uncle Mikes padded soft case strapped on my Honda Rincon's front rack. Since its a Stag carbine, its only 34 1/2" long (collapsed); longer guns might get wiped out!

I will promise you that strapping a AR down on the front of a 4 wheeler is just about the best test a scope and mounts can be put thru.........after a trip or three you will KNOW your rig is solid.....Kelly

PS - I use a soft sided case as well.

I carry mine two ways. One with out and one with gun case. If the road or trail is dirty I always take gun case.

Roy I cant help you with the AR question but I can say that you wont be disappointed with your Rancher. I have a 2006 Rancher 400 4x4 with push button shift. I took it to the local river one day and rolled it down a huge cliff. It flipped end over end 6 times and all it did was bend the front and rear racks. I even drove it back to my truck. They are extremely tuff ATV's.

I use two methods, My shorter AR fits in my trunk box, or I sling'er over the shoulder, those tactical slings are nice for that. The game laws are sticky here in Co, so how I carry it depends on if there are any big game seasons open.

Tripod, I have 2600miles on it, only one problem with it the headlight switch went bad, need to change it. I didn't use it last fall or it would have 3200 or more miles on it. I use it in extreme conditions trapping in WY, usually around 600 miles a trip. I fopund in high altitudes you need to use high octane gas when it is -5f or colder, or it may take a half hour to start it. I couldn't go last fall because my wife had cancer again, twice in two years.
I would really like one with power steering, when I load it down the steering is much tougher. I had a 400 Foreman before this one, I had to change the parking brake latch, that was all in 2500 or so miles. Normally they don't have much for repairs, like the Polaris have had from what I hear.T.20

Here's my theory.....
HDR's are derived from M-16's. GI's have hauled them thru the dust and rain, drug them thru the mud and pretty much everything else you can imagine for 40+ years now with impressive results. Get some scope caps and don't worry about the dust. It cleans right off. Sure Grip Racks makes some nice ATV racks. I have one on my Ranger and am very happy with it.

He makes a specific mount for different models of ATV's. Mine goes overhead, from one side of the roll cage to the other. I would think yours would be similar on a Rhino. Mine holds 2 long guns, 1 forward, 1 aft. I've hauled my heavy [beeep] HDR all over and never had a problem as long as I remember to use the velcro.

Thanks Tactical.20, I had a Polaris for 8 years that required a few small repairs but it sure rode nice. The Honda is a lot lighter and no belt. In reading on the internet it seems the most common repair is choke cable replacement. Anyway your repairs seem very minor too. Hope your wife is better. Thanks
