How do you protect your game cameras?

Just before elk season a friend of mine discovered someone stole his game camera. He did leave it next to a trail on public land so I'm sort of not surprised. Then my wife told me that someone stole her dad's and bother's game cameras that were placed on private land that they had permission to be on. My wife got me a game camera for Christmas so now I'm nervous about setting it out next year. So I'm wondering what some of you guys are doing to keep your cameras from getting stolen.

Bought a fancy camera this year that sends a text when it takes a picture, so I will know if anyone is around my camera. I too was really worried after hearing stories about cameras disappearing so i bought a metal camera box that you can bolt to a tree then lock it.(no way to get to the bolts without opening the box) I also put a python rope lock on for extra security seems to have worked so far. really i think the only thing they could do is cut down the tree.

I have several game camera's and I bought several steel lock boxes (Camlockbox.com)that were specifically made for each camera. I then used the Master lock Python cables to secure the box to a large tree. While I felt that I had to do something to protect my camera's, everyone knows that a box and a cable will only keep an honest guy, honest.

Most thieves, especially those looking for camera's (and they are definitely out there), have the necessary equipment on their person, to take most anything that they might come across when canvassing the hunting woods. In my opinion, you have to at least make an attempt to protect your investment, and so far I've not had any of mine stolen or showing signs of tampering.

My $0.02!!

Yeah. The camlock boxes are really nice.

Like you said, if someone wants it bad enough, they are probably going to get it. But I lag bolt the boxes to a tree, so it's going to make them really have to work for it.

I use both camlock boxes and custom1enterprises boxes. I will only buy the custom1enterprises boxes for all new cameras now. They are made out of a thicker metal and just seem more durable. I have fourteen cameras and a steel box for each of them. Also makes it easier when checking cards. Pull the camera from the box, change cards, reinsert into box and lock it up. No more having to re-aim and making sure it's set on the tree correctly.

Have you tried the camlock heavy duty boxes? Those are what I run. They are really thick and heavy. I'll have to check out theose others, just curious how they compared and are priced.

No, I don't have any of the heavy duty ones. I liked the regular ones until I saw pictures of how one was opened up because nothing is welded and the camera was taken. They pried open the top and pulled the camera right out. I don't believe they had a cable running through the box and camera both. Just had it lag bolted to the tree and a mmasterlock on the front. That would have prevented it from being pulled out, but the cable lock isn't very secure. Only slows them down a little from taking it. This was the reasoning for me switching and now that I did. I'm glad because the Custom1Enterprise boxes are built like tanks.

Lock boxes along with setting your cameras up high in trees..14' up or plus. Take a ladder to get it there and what not but once you understand how it feels to lose several to bear and stealers youde understand its worth it. If someone wants it, they get it/destroy it somehow. Just makes it harder.

Build your own lock box from Metal Ammo can. Lag bolt it to a tree from the inside and then put your camera in and lock the lid with the best lock you can get.

Buy cheap cameras. A box isnt going to protect your camera from vandals if they come upon it. If they got guns, your box will get destroyed also. I seen sale on truth cams 46 for 50$ a piece if you buy 2 or more. They was refurbished though. If they want it or dont want you to have it,they will find a way. Also believe in karma.
