A fresh coyote, flat-out upper 30's-low 40's. Yrs ago Dad had a female greyhound catch dog[Brownie]. She would top out right @ 50mph for a city block or so. Then slow down to mid-upper 40's.

A fast loper, I figure is doing around 20.

One day, she & a group of other sighthounds. Were dumped close range, on a fresh coyote. Coyote was on the large size. Main group of sighthounds was a little ways behind the coyote. They all were running flat-out. Female greyhound[Brownie] passed up through the group & was gaining on the coyote.

She's near catching him, all of a sudden that coyote had abit more speed & pulled away from her. We were awestruck @ his speed. As the coyote had to be doing over 50.

Thats funny but true. They do seem to speed up after every near miss don't they. I swear they definately switch gears at every near miss and speed up even more.

I have chased them on the prairie on my ATV and 40 mph will catch 'em in a reasonable distance. 45 mph catches them faster and 50 mph (on my Grizzly 660 or Yamaha YZ250 dirt bike) will suck them right up. One time, my well man was working on a windmill and I was riding out there to see what was up when I jumped a coyote. Just for fun, I herded him 2.5 miles across the pasture and drove him right past the mill, but they were already gone. 35 mph got it done- any faster and I'd pressure him too much and cause him to dodge and turn. I was doing some zig-zagging at that speed, so I'd put him closer to 30 over that extended distance.
