i have a dumb question but how good can coyotes hear? i was walking to my firststand the other day and i wondered if i made too much noise walking to it. as i walked in the hard snow it crunched every foot step real loud, and was wondering if coyotes can hear my footsteps? is there anything you can do? do they care?

I always think I make too much noise and get on my buddy all the time because I can hear his big feet stomping the ground. In my opinon I believe they can hear you if your close to them.I would also say it depends on terrain.Along time ago i hunted turkeys with a friend of mine and he was pursistant for me to make a step every time he stepped and stepp on your toes only.Every now and then he would stop and make a few scrapes on ground..aka turkey scratching... I can say it worked several times as too we killed alot of birds quick.I have walked very close to coyotes also using same technique even scratch ground sometimes while calling to make it seem real.

Iv read they can hear a mouse sqeek 100yds away. And smell 1lb of meat in a 10mph wind a mile away. Crunchy snow sucks, especially on a calm day or night. I try n be as stealthly as possible. If it takes me a hour to get into a good stand then Thats what it takes

I hate walking on crunchy snow. I feel like everything within a half mile can hear me. It probably isn't quite as bad as it feels, but my confidence takes a dive right off the bat. Hate it.

As far as a coyotes hearing, it's good. Real good. Real, real, real good. Never under estimate it.

Their hearing helps fill their bellies, helps keep track of who or what is in or out of their territories, keep track of mates, family members, foes, friends and helps keep them alive.

Do they care if they hear you walking? He11 yeah they care. If they do hear you walking, it's almost a sure bet you ain't gonna see em. That's how much they care.

Tip toe on crunchy snow. It won't help, but at least your buddies will get a good laugh.

Deer make alot of noise walking through crunchy snow too, so on my way out I try not to march out but walk alittle bit stop, walk, stop and so on. Who knows if that helps but it eases my mind on making noise.

here is a saying I heard a while ago

A feather fell from the sky
the eagle saw it
the deer heard it
the bear smelled it
and the coyote did all three

I've posted this before, but I imagine its been lost in the shuffle..

While hunting with a buddy, we spot 3 dogs out there about 1000 yards (yep-no typo 1000). We pull the truck over, get out and belly crawl about 400 yards, then I range with my Leica two dogs laying down at 700 yards, and one closer at 600 yards.

The wind was blowing a bit, about 7 mph, from our left, no sun-it was overcast with no fog.

We were in full snow camo, sitting in a bit of high grass that stuck out of the snow, on a tiny rise, and for the heck of it, I told my hunting buddy to "squeak" with his mouse squeaker.

When he did, all three looked up-Instantly.

Mind you, I don't mean he squeaked a couple of times...He did it just ONCE.

If this doesn't answer your question....nothing will.

+1 My cattle dog can hear a critter out in the yard 20-40 yards from the house when she is inside with all doors and window closed. I'm sure a coyote has keener senses.than a domestic dog...

Don't know if a 'yotes is keener than a ranch dog, maybe it's that the ranch dog is more Comfortable than the 'yote, and just doesn't have to let Us know everything he hears.

I know when I'm out hunting, and a ranch dog starts barking, I'm fairly certain he's barking at me, although most times they are way off.

What 'cha think?

last week or so before i shot i hit the end of the rifle barrel off a piece of metal near me. The yote was 120 yards away and didnt even look up. Had its nose on the ground the entire time.

Any other day they would have heard me walking 300 yards away.
