How many believe in scent elimination

Okay, me myself have gone the extra mile (most of the time) and did the whole she-bangang as far as bathing, detergent, and sprays with what I thought was success. It is not my favorite part of the hunt, but will continue if it buys me a higher % of kills. That being said.....I don't here you guys talk'n much about it and am start'n to raise an eyebrow. I know there is no nose that knows like a yotes nose and the wind direction is probably the #1 concern in relation to where you "Plop" down. It is rarely mentioned in the videos either. So I ask You All....Am I wasting my time and $$$?

don't believe it at all. too keen a sense.
dog trainers tell me that not only do dogs smell the human but smell the food on his clothes, the gas on his hand, the detergent on his clothes, the shampoo, the leather wallet,
his breath, his crotch and anything else on that person.

If you beat the wind you got it made. I like to go out clean and treat my clothes with baking soda but that is it. Scent Lock is a waste of money to me. If it was so good the drug cartel would use it to hide the drugs from the dogs.

My two cents.

I used to do the who shebang too. I still do for deer hunting, especially with the bow. But I think now that the only thing scent crontrol will do for you in coyote hunting is to maybe buy you a few more seconds, and that may be what you need to make the shot. "They are going to use the wind. They are going to use the wind. They are going to use the wind." I keep repeating that to my self and try to set up so that I too can use the wind to my advantage. Coyotes smell people every day. But they don't smell them when the dinner bell rings or that other coyote is out there invading there teritory. Here in the east a coyote would have to have his nose cut off to not pick up human scent every day of the week. It doesn't bother them until it becomes clear that that human scent is close by. So scent control can make you SEEM like you are farther away, and that may help, but I prefer that they not smell me at all.

It helps to have an area to hunt that you can enter from different directions. Play the wind. They will. That is the ultimate scent control.

I don't use it. I smoke cigars in the truck and am sure I smell just like one to a coyote. I ALWAYS pay attention to the wind so I can cut them off before they wind me.

With that said, all the scent elimination certainly won't hurt you. It just might not help you much.

The only people who benefit from scent control products are those who make and sell the stuff!

A recent experience. I was horseback on the mountain behind my house. I had a couple of Airedales with me; a 7 year old female and a pup. I saw the female drop off the logging road that I was on; but she didn’t bark, so I continued riding along. After a bit I turned around in the saddle to see if the female was coming. I saw her running to catch up, and she was slinging her head from side to side. My first thought was that she had got herself into a bunch of yellow jackets, but when she ran up along side of me I could smell it. Skunk! She got a full charge right in the face! Five minutes later, she bounded up the hill and flushed a covey of quail. She could smell those birds from several yards away, five minutes after taking a direct blast in the face from a skunk! Now you tell me how effective you think your cover scent is.

When hunting deer and predators I do believe in scent elimination to a certain extent. I've tried being really anal about scent elmination and doing everything I could to eliminate any foreign scents, and while it helps, it doesn't seem to help any more than just some basic scent elimination procedures.

Basically what I do now is just make sure I don't stink or have an obvious "human" odor. Animals smell humans and other stuff every day. So what I've found that works for me is to just eliminate the worst of my scent. I don't try to keep food, gas, or any other smells off me, just the human body odor. There's no way to eliminate 100% of your scent, so I just get rid of the worst that is easily recognizable as "human" and play the wind.

Have to agree with most of the comments here. One thing not mentioned was that your breath gives you away as a human. So to eliminate odor, you'll have to stop breathing. That makes it hard to stay on a stand long enough (humor attempt). It never hurts to try to keep them to a minimum as if you smell too terrible, they may smell you even if the wind is right. But you can't fool that nose if the wind is wrong.

I don't know about coyotes, since I have not had them come to my calling yet.
However, I believe strongly in no scent cover for clothing and body the whole thing. I have had deer and elk come up to me while camo'd out and they would look at me but not scent me while I was in a ground blind.
I had one with a fawn come to the tree behind me and sniff me from around the tree and not take off running but go back to feeding.
So it works with them but maybe not with Coyotes since their noses are better at distinguishing diff scents.
Just my $0.02

I've never worried to much about scent just wind direction. I always had this little theory about the LACK of scent at a stand,if your howling yotes it seems to me when they communicate with each other they do alot of peeing and poopin.Markin their territory with urine is a form of communication.
So if they here barks or howls do they expect to smell the yote also? Same for distress calls a rabbit
being torn up has to emit odor I sure everyone has smelled an odor when you clean a animal. If those odors aren't present will this raise a red flag and hang a coyote up if he's already being cautious?

I think scent sheild spray my help for bowhunting,But I will Not buy into this sentlok clothing bull@#*t. Spend your money the way you like. I know I will not make the scentlok peolpe rich. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Here's the example I throw out every time this comes up:

A trained drug dog can smell cocaine in gasoline. I'm sure a coyote, that is most certainly more adept at using his scenting abilities than a 5,000-year domesticated dog, can smell your stinkin' butt inside your fancy scent elimination clothing.

I never mess with scent control. I just play the wind. I too have had coyotes and deer and elk walk straight up my scent cone right to me, even though I'm just sittin' there stinkin' like a human. Why? I don't know, but it happens to me without scent elimination crap. Sometimes I think they just don't care.

Just hunt smart, check the downwind side, and kill a coyote. You're gonna get busted every now and then, it's part of the game. All that fancy gear won't stop it. You'll be farther ahead if you spend all that money on gasoline to do more calling and ammo so you can shoot better when you do call one in. Rant off.

you may want to read the scent elimination article written in the latest FUR-FISH-GAME magazine. it tells a bunch about the nose of a canine. i am pretty sure a dog that can smell a year old bone under 24" of snow and ice isn't gonna be fooled by "any" manufactured elimination gimmick. remember the last thing they tell you when they sell you a scent lock suit........." now go out there and hunt, just make sure you pay attention to the wind" hahahahahahaaaaaaaaaa

in case you haven't figured this out.........I don't use it!

i'll spend my money on something else and use the wind to my favor.

The way I see it is that if you wear scent lock, breathe in but don't breathe out. Your breath fills the air with the scent of human to a yote. If you can hold your breath for 20 to 30 minutes on a call stand then the scent lock might work a little. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif It's a joke. If people will buy it they will continue to make it. Save your greens for more ammo and more guns.

I think I remember hearing some of these words before. Looks like the predator callers have seen through the world of advertisements and now know the truth. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Having trained and used a narcotics dog for a couple of years. Several of the above posts are on the money.

Don't waste your time and money on all that odor eliminating junk. You CANNOT fool the yotes nose.

ive got more,
i use sound to get a coyote within eyesite. if he sees me move he may stop or get nervous. sometimes if two dogs come in and i shoot one, i can yelp and make the other take a second look. when a coyote gets my scent he turns "ears of a**holes" and gets the hell outta dodge (never second look)

so, you tell me scent elimination works on a yote.......there is one thing he never questions.......his nose!

I don't worry about it. Just watch the wind direction and kill them before they catch a whiff of you. I think all of the scent elimination gear that is flooding the market is doing nothing more than taking advantage of the hunters who are paranoid about scent. I'd much rather spend my money on rifles, scopes, calls, etc.

Take care,

Rusty

Shoot them before they get down wind. You will save time and money on all of the destink stuff
and you'll have money for more bullets.
Yote Hunter.
