How many of you have the Golden Rod Dehumidifier in the gun safe?

I just installed a 18" Golden Rod Dehunidifier in my Cannon gun safe. I had initially had a slight problem with a little surface speck rust on a a couple guns stored in there. I installed the unit today and have read some good reviews on them. Just wondering how many of you guys have them installed in your safes and are you happy with them?

I had one installed the first winter...after that, I gave it away.
Never had problem with Rust after that, of course I do keep my weapons oiled....

I've got one of these Dri-Z-Air things in my safe. It grabs all the water vapor and the pellets turns to liquid. I've been using it for 10 years in Oregon and no rust inside my safe. About every 6 months or so, I have to empty it and add another bag of crystals ($1 at Bi-Mart). You can tell when it needs changing, because all of the pellets will have turned to liquid. Pretty foolproof.

Highly recommended, but make sure you don't tip that salt/liquid onto metal, it's corrosive. Keep it low in the safe and you should be fine.

I considered the electric ones, but I didn't want to drill a hole in my safe. I figured that might compromise the fire rating.
That Dri-Z-Air unit is designed to keep a 100 cubic foot volume dry, too. I run two of them in my camper and it keeps it from getting damp sitting outside all winter.
They go through pellets a lot faster than the one in the safe, though.

Live about 25 miles inland from Gulf coast w/high humidity and have had a goldenrod in my safe for over 10 years. No rust problems.

Having said that, read somewhere that fireproof safes that use drywall to provide the fire protection (mine does) have the fire rating reduced by dehumidifiers because dehumidifiers reduce the moisture in the drywall??????? Not sure as to the accuracy of that, however.

Regards,
hm

Yeah I didnt want to drill mine either but then I started reading the owners manual and I found the little hole that was already pre-drilled for one of these. So I didnt have to drill anything.. I have it installed now and we will see. I like the Dri-Z-Air thing too.. That does seem fool proof..

Oh ya, I forgot about the Dri-Z-Air thingy, I was using one of them for about 2 months, then I got to thinking...
sure it's going to grab the moisture, because the safe in not air tight.

So I stuck it on top of the safe and it drew the same amount of moisture. So I said to myself - "this isn't doing much good".

So that was 25 yrs ago and I haven't used the Golden Rod or Dri-Z Air since. Oh, and one other thing, I am not living in the desert either, but instead in the very rainy state of Western Washington.

KEEP THEM WEAPONS OILED WITH A GOOD METAL PROTECTOR AND U WILL BE GOOD TO GO!

I've got an old lamp in the garage I have been meaning to take apart. My plan is to use one of those new twisted florescent light bulbs in the safe . Anyone else tried this ??

here in colorado that could have been considered interference in your hunt

carries a min 10k fine and possible jail time

I would have shot back [beeep]

My safe came with a Golden Rod included in the price of the safe. It is still in it's unopened bag somewhere inside the safe or under my bed. I have been using two small containers of cat litter for over ten years, and have never had any kind of rust or moisture problem. I change the litter every two or three years, if I remember to.
I live in Maryland where the humidity is very high, and it works fine. I have military stuff back to the Civil War, and have never worried about any kind of rust problem. For what you pay for a Golden Rod, you can fill your safe with cat litter!

I use the double coverage method. Goldenrod + All my rifles and pistols are in silicone gunsocks. Also prevents small nicks and such when removing guns stored in back of the safe.

I have one in my gunsafe but mainly because it is located in the garage and not the interior of my home. If I had the safe inside where the A/C unit would knock out the humidity in the air I wouldn't be all that worried about it.
