How many rounds?

How many rounds do yu guys shoot thrru your gun before you clean? I have a fairly new savage 12 vlp dbm in 22-250 and it has been a tack driver. I have shot aprox 40 after a short break in period. Missed a possum at 250 ish yards other day and decided that it may be time to take to range and check zero. It didnt shoot bad but not as good as it usually does. So I figure its time to clean it. What is your usual round count before you clean?

Same as the above^^^^^. I will say that sometimes when barrels are pretty new they might need a cleaning more often but once you get a couple hundred rounds fired you may notice that you can go longer between cleanings.

Sometimes a guy just flat misses from time to time.

Yep...when accuracy falls off. If the rifle will be sitting for a while, I'll draw a few patches of CLP down the bore. Other wise, just wait until the groups open up.

Yep what everybody else said I clean when accuracy starts to suffer, I have some custom barrels that can go for a couple of hundred rounds also have a factory Savage LRPV in 22-250 that may be the most accurate factory rifle I have ever owned for at least 25 rounds it is also the worst copper mine I have ever owned

Push a couple of wet patches through the barrel, then dry patch out. Look to see if you have heavy copper streeks on top of the lands.

I seen my groups opening a little and was wanting to switch to a different ammo to try. How important is it to clean when you change ammo?

The groups are already opening up. May as well start with a clean slate on the ammo change.

I clean only once accuracy degrades or the rifles is going into long term storage. The only gun I keep a barrel log for is my remmy 700 6.5x47mm Lapua. By my log I cleaned it when I first got it from the smith, then cleaned it again after 799 rounds, and I now have 1108 rounds through it with no loss of accuracy that I can tell. I figure I've got another 400-500 rounds to go before I have to clean it again LOL.

I clean after every shoot. Can't help it, that darn Marine Corps training. However it does sound like yours needs a good cleaning. Keep in mind that you may have broken in your barrel, but it usually takes a couple of hundred to smooth it out unless you have a custom cut rifle barrel.

Quote:How important is it to clean when you change ammo?...I clean my barrels every time I'm building new load information...Once I find a good load, I rarely change the components unless replacements are just not available...

Then, as others, I only clean when the accuracy starts to drop off..Each rifle is slightly different..

I clean after every use.Even at that my accuracy fell off in one of my guns due to years of copper build up the Hoppe's failed to remove. So what you use is more important.Wipe Out foam is the answer to that one.

I have a Ruger M77 in 204 Ruger and I'm actually afraid to clean it. It still shoots one holes and I have no idea on how many rounds have been shot thru it. Still picks off groundhogs at 300+ yards without any problem.

I pull the bore snake often. I get out the rod and brush every once in a while. Maybe every couple hundred rounds or when I am really bored.
