How much for tone board jigs?

I finally found a metal tone board jig on the web, but they wanted a ridiculous 180 bucks for it!? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gifHow much is really reasonable, and would it be possible to make it out of wood if you don't have the stuff to make them out of metal? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I agree, $180 is a great price. Watch out buying some stock jigs....most are for duck calls and what you'll get for a toneboard is.....well, a duck call. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I've never personally used a jib, but I've seen some made from a piece of pipe. Some were made by a machine shop, some were made right at home with a bench grinder.

The cheapest solution (one I continue to use) is draw your toneboard arc on your delrin with a cardboard or mylar cutout. Then cut, grind, sand to the line. Of course, their is fine tuning needed afterwards, but that's part of the fun....

good point Tony. make sure it has PREDATOR next to the "JIG"

unless your coyotes really depend on ducks in distress for survival! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

the one i got, it wont be destroyed by a scroll saw blade, or band saw blade, and it wont be sanded down by my belt sander. i think its a perfectly good price considering how many uses i get out of the thing.

It is a predator one, that just sounds like a lot for a little metal jig.

You need to consider how important your time is to you. When building howlers, I spend 1 hour sanding and polishing, 30 minutes engraving, and 3-4 hours perfecting the toneboard. The toneboard is always the longest part of the process.

Seeing as how I work in a machine shop I am currently working on my own tone board jig. If I get it right there could be a possibility that I could make them a bit cheaper at some point.

There is no way I would pay $180. I am a mold maker by trade. Making the jig would be the easy part. Knowing the shape for the tone board would be another story. I could very easily copy one of my calls but thats not my style.

One of these days I will come up with my own design. Then I will make one.

I make my PVC boards off of a piece of Cherry that I cut to a jig shape. Make a cut pretty close to the slope and then freehand use a 1" belt sander to finish it. Get about 80/85% success rate. Use 3/8" schedule 80 PVC, 1/2" schedule 80 PVC and 1/2" schedule 40 PVC. Schedule 40 is cheap, the schedule 80 is not used in this area and have to get it shipped in with freight it can cost as much as Delrin. Quacker Stacker Duck calls makes predator jigs 2 different kinds, if I remember correctly Bearmanric helped to design them, Cost is $150 plus shipping each at www.quackerstackerduckcalls.com You can also use duck call jigs, just have to make the tone channel go all the way through and put a little more slope on the end. The first coyote call I ever saw was a modified PS Olt duck call in the 60s, made my first call right after that in shop class, the teacher thought I was making a duck call like he made, got a lot of easy milage out of that class until he found out I was making a coyote call. Hope this helps.
