Here in my area wv I have only seen 1. I've talked to older people and they said it use to be nothing to see a gray. But u would hardly ever see reds. Now u see reds all the time and its pretty rare to see a gray. Most of the people I talked to say they haven't saw a gray in years.

You might have a healthy population. They are nocturnal so most don't see them. I had never seen a coyote until the day I started hunting them. Grays stick to thick cover such as swamps. You target them, you will probably find them.

We called over a dozen in a 4.5 hour period where I hunt in texas. Our best stand was 5 grey foxes on one stand. Foxes were bouncing everywhere that night, problem was we forgot the shotgun. They charged in and a shot gun would have cleaned the house They were so close. Only seen two reds in my life in this area. Once was a pair with two young ones in a culvert. All our hunting is mainly done at night in the thicker stuff.

I have called in a few Grays where I'm at. I have only called in one red since I've been calling predators. My brothers say they see reds often where they deer hunt but I havent seen any.

Grey fox are very common here in northeast Pa, much more so than reds. I kill one red for every 25 greys. Greys are very aggressive compared to reds when calling however.

They tell me there aren't any in WA just Reds but we called in a grey a few years ago and it was so much fun watching him come in darting from sage bush to sage bush we gave him a pass. Haven't seen one up here since. We have a few Reds around on the wetside.

We have them here in Mo. but in six years I have never called one up. I take about 20 coyotes a year but no greys called up yet. Any fox I call up gets a free pass anyway. Coyotes are too hard on them.

I've seen about a doz in the last year, seems about 50/50

I seen another animal it had a smaller body than a grey fox
it had long legs and a bushy tail with maybey a dozen rings
around it's tail was maybe 20" long it was not a coon....
moving very fast across the road in front of me at about 2am.
moved like a fox, it looked back at my lights just before it
went off in the edge of the tall grass......i seen it maybe
1 1/2 seconds.....Sorry I don't want to hijack thread.

We called a grey in a few weeks ago. my neighbor had a grey
chicken stealer a few years back, i seen a few grey and red
when i had my chickens a few years back....

I haven't seen a grey fox in many years. The last one I did see was a road kill. The old timers around here used to talk about a cross fox. Apparently that was a log time ago.

I never saw one until I was about 45, they where here 2-3 years and haven't seen one in 6-7 years. Reds have always been here but their population has its ups and downs, may see a lot one year then not see one for 2-3 years.

I wonder what it was. I seen a weird looking animal one night it was small about like a groundhog had short legs a pretty long tail the whole animal appeared to be light brown redish color. I was on a back road so I put the truck in park and took off running after it to get a better look I had a bright white spotlight . Never did see it. Nor did I find any tracks.

After doing some research, today, I'd say it looked like a ring tailed cat.......it was the height of a medium sized fox
but with a smaller body and longer legs, it was tan to redish brown in color and it had those ringed tailed cat looking heads.
I was gonna post a pic of what it looked close to but
I don't know how to....well i've never seen one before, and i think those ring tailed cats are in the desert or out west??
I live in a remote area in southern Va.

You never know what people are doing these days catching animals and running them around here and there it might
find something to breed with out here and God knows what
it's offspring might look like.....

Ok I did some more research and it looked like a ring tailed cat, except it's eyes were a little smaller, it was at least
twiced the size or maybe 3 times the size and it's tail was shorter in relativity anyways...who knows?

NC has plenty of grays, see them regular, sometimes see 3-4 just in an evening deer stand without calling, they are a sucker for anything squeaky

That is very interesting to me, must be a localized and regional thing with the grey populations. In my neck of the Ozark's I call grey fox fairly often. I may call 7 - 10 of the little woods fox per year on a decent year. Very seldom see a red fox around here in the timber. They tend to hang around the crop fields and there aren't many of those in the Mark Twain National Forest.
