How to check for wore out barrel

So what are you looking for when a barrel is wore out? Don't have sights on the gun right now so can't really tell by shooting it.

A Micrometer would surely assist in making such a determination.

ie. Is the Barrel still in specs, or does it fall outside specs.

Bore scope or chamber cast. Look for wear at the throat, right where the rifling starts at the chamber, that is where BBl wear starts and is most pronounced.

Well it was my buddies and I know he has put about 2000 rounds through it and he did alot of rappid firing with it and such traded it for 4 cords of wood so I'm not out anything.

If its a 556/223 ,Should be just fine ,unless someone before him put 40 or 50 thousand before him at full auto.

Even then he woulda had to shoot it in a desert alot,,w/sand in the chamber to hurt it.

Hbar contour barrels are by design,,meant to be rapid, burst, full auto....There are in use service rifles right now,,that have fired hundreds of thousands of rounds...no worries.

Ya it's a S&W m4 .223 5.56 with chrome lined barrel i guess I will scope it and shoot it and if it is all over the place a new barrel isn't much but hopefully it's still in good shape.

Bout the only thing it might be is dirty.might run some good bore solvent through it.

Unless something stupid was/is done,,you will shoot yourself to the poor house before you shoot out that barrel.

I cleaned it when I first got it and it wasn't very dirty he cleaned it after every use. I was just told lots of rapid firing would toast the barrel
Thanks for the help [beeep].

Hey no worries,,,people have misconceptions and are misinformed about barrel life,,in general.

Sure with about any barrel ,,you could burn it up running max,or above max loads,,ignoring signs of pressure..

AR15 is the civilian version of the select fire M16 .

Cracks me up w/folks selling a upper or a whole rifle,,saying it was never rapid fired...Really?..I mean REALLY??...
Anything that can stand the heat, stress and friction from full auto....2 or 3 Beta mags in a row,,non stop...These things are made for this!.

I run a couple fast fire thirty rounds through all my builds,,to make sure of feed/ function,,,AND on other occasions mixed w/tracers...just for giggles.

A .223/5.56 barrel CAN be burned out in just a few thousand rounds with rapid fire...but not if it's chrome lined (different from chrome-molly).

The chrome lined bore is specifically to keep it from being burned out by full auto fire. The downside is that they are usually not as accurate.

If the crown's in good shape, you don't have anything to worry about. 2,000 is just broken in well.

I doubt you could change 20 round mags on a semi-auto fast enough to "burn it out", unless you had a whole bunch and were trying to.

Man where did you find a buddy that would trade you an AR for 4 small cords of wood??

*cough cough* I have about 7 cords of wood that should be dry enough to burn this next winter if anyone is interested!

Ya I told him I didn't want anything but he insisted so I finally took it and told him it's there if he wants it. He has guns up the waazu he probably buys 1-2 a year.
