Ive had really good luck with the Primos Coon Squaller which produces some wicked sounds to bring'em in Close!!

Most of my success has been from hunting them at night along creek beds, rivers, etc.. with ample brush and tree cover for them to feel comfortable with. Good luck out there! Hope some of that Might help you..

Coon squaller did it for me last night.

Set up in an area where I was seeing them on my trail cam, played this http://www.western-rivers.com/downloads/Raccoon%20Squall%20%28Mity%20Max%29.mp3 on my blackberry for about 2-3 mins and out came that big tailless coon.

If you go on http://www.western-rivers.com/promo_catalog.html

fax them the form, and 9.95 to them and you can get an electronic coon call and a mouth coon call. that should cover your bases and for $9.95 you cant go wrong.

I have had good luck with squeekers at nite during the spring time also playing a woodpecker distress call on a cheap cd player. If you have a portable cdplayer\ radio then you have an e-caller just burn sounds to a cd and there you go. But the mouse squeeker at nite is what I have used.

Coons fighting played near trees that have a hollow. If he's in there you'll know it in less than 2 min. Better shoot him as soon as he clears the hole and won't fall back in it because about half of them don't want to fight and will haul tail the other direction from the caller.

I've yet to call a coyote but wearing them coons out.

haven't tried it during the day yet, but I am going to. Hopefully it works.

One thing thats bad about not using a electronic call that is set up away from you is knowing you are calling in a pissed off coon during breeding season right to your face. The one that I shot was running at me full bore and i got the shot off at 10-15 feet away.

id suggest using a shotgun, you are going to be making quick shots.

I can't wait til those calls come in and I can try them out.

Luke,

Some people have had success with calling in raccoons to a rabbit or chicken distress. We have had the majority of our success using a Raccoon Fight or Raccoon Distress. A Raccoon Squaller is probably your best bet for a hand call. It works at any and all times of the day. We got six out of one tree about a week ago at 2:00 in the afternoon. Bright sunshine and about 38 degrees.

Set up on a Den Tree if you can and I would suggest sitting on the back side of the hole. Therefore, the coon has to come all the way out of his hole to see you. Also, you need to be quiet in your approach...we have had them bust us while setting up the camera and decoy a few times (not all of them are asleep in the tree). --- We use the MOJO Critter for a Decoy and this provides a good visual for the Raccoon when he pokes his head out. We have not only had them attack the decoy but we shot the decoy and raccoon in the same frame a few weeks back.

We like to stay close to creek beds and corn fields but the great thing about raccoon hunting is that they are everywhere! Big Narly trees with holes are pretty easy to spot.

Good Luck and show us some pictures when you have success!

Here is a link to some Raccoon Action.....

We are in production of a Daytime Raccoon Calling DVD and look to have it out soon!

Happy Hunting!

Awesome video!
I do not live near any swamps like in the video but i have marshy areas all over. Where would be the best place/time to look for them? We are allowed to spotlight in 1 county that is close. We can also get permission to shoot problem animals on private property outside the legal area with spotlights. Is the best chance in the day or night to call them in?
Also, do you have to set up your stand like you would on a fox or just bust in there and start calling?

What kind of volume are you using on the den trees ? I went out last weekend for about 1 hr and called 2 trees and produced 2 coons. 1 was curious and 1 feared for his life. I was trying to set the volume to a level that would be about the same as it would be if there was actually a real fight going on. Today we went out and called a lot of hollows that didn't produce anything. The first one we killed came to us on the ground from where I don't know. Later on I spotted one in a fork and woke him up with the caller then shot him. We had just called a tree that wasn't 75 yds from where this one was. The las one we killed was called out of a hollow and wasn't interested in anything but getting away from the call. I wonder if the weather being gloomy and overcast may have been part of the reason we couldn't get them out of the hollows. It always seems to work better on sunny blubird days. It also seems the males want to come to the call and the females want to go the other way.

I haven't tried calling them with a distress call yet. How long do you give them to show up before moving on ?

Missed this post a few days ago and it seems like I need to catch up. Hopefully you guys are still around!

Fox,
You need to just be looking for Den Trees (the bigger, the better)...you'll find that as soon as you start calling for them and having success, this will come naturally. I seem to be looking for trees no matter what I am doing whether that be deer hunting, coyote hunting or driving down the highway....just making mental notes along the way.
Best chance to call them is during night time hours, being that they are out and about at those times....but we have found daytime calling to be very successful as well and it sure is more fun when you can see it all take place (and the camera too!). You want to be as quiet as possible on your approach to the stand. The Raccoons although potentially asleep are still very aware of their surroundings and they will bust you on the way in if you are too loud. We also suggest that you position your stand to where the coon has to come all the way out of his hole before he can see you or the e-caller.

BMcD,
We normally try to use half volume on the Den Trees --- We currently use the FOXPRO FURY and it has a range up to 40...we will normally start out at 12 to 16 and work our way up to 24 at a max....starting out quiet is always a bonus for two reasons.
1) You don't want to scare him.
2) The louder you call, the greater the possibility that you caused a coon to pop his head out of the tree that is 75 yards away from you and now he might lose interest. (sometimes you will have them come in from 75 yards away (as you stated above), but we always prefer to be 15 yards from him when he hits the ground)
Some will be very attentive and come running out of the tree before our human ears can even hear the call....others will take their time on making an appearance. The louder the sequence, the better the chance that he will come out spooked if he comes out at all.
---My suggestion would be to work you way up to playing the Fight at 22 and the Raccoon Distress at 20 if you happen to have a FoxPro Fury.

Males vs Females....
I would agree that Males are more interested in finding the source, but we have quite a few females that will make their way to the call as well. Calls that we currently use are Raccoon Distress, Raccoon Fight, Raccoon Pup Distress (the pup sounds seem to be more submissive and be more successful at bringing in Females/youngsters), Raccoon Puppies and Twittering Raccoon.

Most of our Stands last between 3-8 minutes based upon activity. That is one of the advantages to calling Raccoons is that you can sit down and make it happen quick then move 150-200 yards and do it all over again.

We are in production of an instructional DVD for Daytime Raccoon Calling to hopefully add a visual aid to all this in the near future.

Sorry to be so long, but hopefully it helps!

Happy Hunting and God Bless,

Richie

I would LOVE to thin out the coons on my property and this sure looks like a lot of fun!! Don't know why, but I've never even considered calling them during the day. Can't wait to try it!

Thanks for posting the info and the video!
