ya woo lucky him whens mine coming?! (will get pics after we retrieve it, waiting for the snow to harden up tonight so the hike isnt as bad)

He said when he gets it he will inspect it and decide if he wants to get it tanned but if not i can have it and do what ever i want with it. My jeep has a Giant CB antena on top and i want to tie the coyote tail to it but i dont want to tie it up there and have it start to stink and fall apart. What would i need to do at home to tan it i guess?

Strip it off the bone first, then split it on the bottom side all the way to the tip. Then salt it down really well, and knock off the old salt and add fresh salt tomorrow.
It'll be preserved after that so you can figure out how you want to tan it later.

best bets to go with borax if sendign to a commercial tanery some get fussy over salt as it messes with there tanning chemicals.

Noob...I've got a full red fox hide out in the garage that I use as a background when I take pictures of my calls for sale.
All I did was skin and flesh it well, split the tail to the tip and then rub a handful of borax into the hide. Then dried it as usual. It's three years old, no hair has slipped, no bugs and it's in fine shape. I'm sure it will last for several more years. It would sure get you by until you get your next tail...
Just a thought.

noobie, I tan hides on a daily basis, & if you'd like, you can dry salt your tail & send it to me to be tanned. Won't cost you anything other than the postage to get it here. I always have enough solution mixed up to handle something as small as a coyote tail. I can just drop the tail in with some of the other hides that I'll be tanning anyway. I also have a couple of shot up coyote hides that I could tan the tail on & send to you. If your interested, just let me know. I'd be glad to do it for you, & it wouldn't be any trouble at all.

Tim, I had a taxidermist friend that salted hides before tanning. It worked OK for him too.

just sharein my experience had a fur buyer dock me for salting when i was a kid that was his statement. just tryin to help out no ill intentions meant 20 mule team borax is cheap and furbuyers praise using it as well as tannerys ive sent to. sorry for argueing with the "proffesionals"

Chilson,
No worries here. Selling furs to a fur buyer is a whole diff ballgame. Our local buyer want's nothing but air dried furs. Borax does work well for bug proofing . I've not used it , but a borax/salt mix works well I'm told. I've only heard this, not tried so I can't say. Only thing I've ever used borax on is birds for mounting.

Buy a Wenojack, it's amust have tail stripping item. I split the tail to the tip, pin it open to a board, dump 1/4 inch of salt over it and wait 3 days, rub the crusty salt off and hang it on the wall.
