A #1 1/2 is perfect for fox. I have caught them in #2's and it would break their leg. If they break a leg they are more likely to get away, but they don't seem to fight a trap near like a coon will.

Dirt hole sets work well for fox. I highly recommend getting some fox urine to put around the trap (not on the trap itself). I have caught red fox, using gray fox urine so that doesn't seem to matter. I have even caught reds in the same trap 2 nights in a row.

A dirt hole set is a set with a hole dug at a more or less 45 degree angle around 3”
wide and around 4 to 6” deep. A trap is set in front of the hole. A 1.5 to 1.75 coil spring trap works well for fox. Stake the trap down and cover the trap up with loose dirt. Place a lure or bait in the hole. A small piece of deer meat will work and sprinkle a little red fox urine above the hole. The traps need to be scent free. I like to get new traps adjust the trigger to go off all at once. Preferably no movement of the trigger before the trap goes off. To clean traps, boil new traps and stakes in baking soda and water. Let traps rust and then boil them in walnut hulls or I prefer crystal logwood. After boiling, don’t touch them with your bare hands, only with a good pair of clean rubber gloves. Edgebyexpedite.com is now manufacturing and marketing my products, if there is enough interest I may change my website to an information page for new trappers and predator hunters, with step by step info and pictures.

This question can't be answered short and simple. There are so many aspsects to successfully trapping any furbearer. If you intend to start fox trapping with the goal of continuing for many years, I'd recommend getting some books, videos, and try getting with someone who is willing to SHOW you what to do. Buying the right size trap is just the beginning. The prep procedures that must follow the purchasing takes time and money. You just don't buy traps, set them, and catch foxes.
If you just want to catch the ones you've seen at an active den I'd recommend snares instead of traps. Snares are cheap, quick to get ready, and very effective. Mating seaso for foxes is mere weeks away, and watching the dens from a distance might enable you to bushwack them. Calling SHOULD work too. Good luck.

check out trapperman.com or traps4kids.com, both sites have alot of good info for beginners. Including pictures which really helped me out when i first started out.
