I Stopped into the local gun shop yesterday and found one of these. It has a Niko scope on it,3-9x40? Looks like they make that too. I do not know anyone with a howa and was wondering if they are good. It is blue with a synthetic stock and he said $350 and he will throw in a case.

I assume you are talking about the Howa 1500 bolt action? Howas are good rifles made in Japan imported by Legacy Sports. Legacy imports the barreled action then adds a Boyd stock. Howa has made the Weatherby Vanquard for many years and the old S&W 1500. The triggers are adjustable down to about 3lbs but you can upgrade to a Timney trigger also.

Niko Sterling scopes are also imported by Legacy but I never seen one so can't say on the quality.

In my opinion Howas are one of the better buys in bolt action rifles, superior to the Savage.

Yippy, I sent you an Email, basicly say's Same as Sam Spade, good rifle, good $ price..See if you can Test Shoot it, try 55 gr. Facory loads at 100 yds..I'd buy it, if I needed a 22.250..S.Wolf ( check rifeling in barrel)

Thanks guys. I will have to give it a try. Lots of good info there. I couldnt find much on a search. What is the twist on the barrel?

I put some money down on it on lunch. yeeeeeeeee haaah.
Still dont know about the scope. My expectations arn't real high. Time will tell though. Got a .22lr that needs one if I dont like it. Thanks for the info!

Yippy, I have a Howa 1500 in 22-250. I REALLY would recommend the gun. Good price too. The gun should have a 1 in 14 twist.

My buddy has had a Vanguard in 22-250 for many years now. He kept it at my house for about 4 of them( not a good decision). It has always shot 55grainers very well--2MG

i just got a howa a few months back it shoots like a dream i've killed crows, coyotes, cats you can pick stuff off as far as you can see i got a tasco varmint scope 6x24x40 it's a perfect all around gun.

I bought one about 2 years back. It was a Howa 1500 .223 with the laminated stock on it. Felt great and I loved the stock on it. I bought it without asking about the rifle and not knowing if they were good. The stock trigger blows. Has a long creep. On the forums here, I bought a used Timmey trigger. What a huge differance!. Before I installed the trigger I was getting around an 1" to 1 1/2 with the timmey in it, I'm prolly getting a little over a 1/2 to 3/4 with reloads with a bipod.

I have nothing but praise for my old 7mm Rem. Mag Vanguard Weatherby. It had a Ramline plastic stock on it, which I had bedded (didn't help much, but made me feel better) and the trigger adjusted as much as it could be. The trigger was junk. Should have changed it out for an aftermarket one, but this Winchester Mod. 70 Stainless with a 26" tube caught my eye one day, and I traded it in for $200 difference after 10 years of ownership. Paid $360 for it new, got most of that back in trade.

Now to do something about the POS plastic stock on the Winchester........

Howa makes a great rifle, I have a 1500 BBL 22-250 that I have owned for 8 years put alot of rounds thru it. Still shoots like a dream. With the bbl tends to get a little heavy packing but I always grab for calling.

Brought it home last night. Havn't even given her a name yet. Bought a box of rem 55gr psp with it. All they had there. Went to another store today and picked up a box of win 55 gr psp. I hope the rain lets up for a bit tomorrow for me to go play.
The scope looks ok, seems clear. The brochure says it is the #1 selling scope in Australia. I will let yall know how it shoots.
Thanks for the input everyone.

My brother in law picked one of those packages up last month. That package comes with a 3x9x42 Niko Stirling scope. The scope is OK. Those scopes, according to the website have an MSRP of $59.00. We sighted that gun in at 100 yards and put 3 under the size of a dime the first day. And that was with the cheap scope. I wonder what it will do with better glass.

I have one on layaway now /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif. I plan to take that scope it comes with and throw it on a 10/22. Then I will pick up a Mueller Eraticator for the Howa 22-250.

I took it out and fired about 40 rounds. I did notice that the stock was hitting at the front and along the right side pretty hard. I though I would see how it did as is for a bit. I was keeping a quarter size group at 75 after about 10 shots. At 100 once things started to heat up the group went. I did not clean it at the range either. I tried to fit a piece of paper after I was done And there was no way.
Once I got home and dud into it I found the left side of the stock had a grove cut to trim excess. The right side must have been forgotten. After a bit of sanding It is good now.
The Niko will not be on there long. I too plan on getting a Mueller. The rings are just a bit tall too.
Overall pretty happy with it. Stock was dissapointing.
Remingtons grouped better than winchester but I will give both a try again due to the stock prob.

Bell and Carlson make a pretty nice stock for these guns. I have been thinking about one that is made in Natural Gear Cammo. Then I also found a place that can do your hole gun, rings scope, bi-pod etc.. in natural gear cammo. I might do the whole gun. That make for a pretty nice looking rig.
