Howa .308 Data?

I searched around for a bit and couldn't find what i was looking for...so here it goes...

I am trying to help a buddy of mine get into reloading. He has a few calibers hes starting out with, and i have agreed to help show him to ropes. This weekend i am going to help him work up a load for his Howa 1500. It has the 24" barrel which is 1x12"

He is wanting to try out varget and currently has some Nosler 180 gr Combined technology's, as well as some nosler 165 BT's.

I have never loaded for a 308, nor a Howa. I know my 700's like to be loaded long. Any info for these Howa's? Any info on loads or where to start would be much appreciated.

I know how to start out here if i was stabbing into the dark, but i was looking for a little help if i could since its not my gun and i don't have a bunch of time to tinker with it for him.

Again, any help would be appreciated!!

Thanks
Brian

My Howa 1500 .308 liked 44.4 grains of Varget topped with the Sierra 168 grain Match King, and Federal Match primers. I don't recall the COAL at the moment, but it's in my book if you need that spec too. The Howa has a long throat and long magazine, so you may want to play with the seating depth to get your best results.

Thanks Guys. My Hornaday Manual said something like 42 gr of varget MAX with 168. Figured it was low as usual. But i just wasnt sure if there was any starting loads you guys recomended as well as if these guns had long throat like my remingtons

Yep...i know how to use the internet. Thanks! I just wanted some inside help here, maybe some tricks. Like Sadak Did. Thanks Though

My Winchester Stealth Likes the 168 gr Noslers and a charge of 45.5 gr of Varget with a Fed BRLR. The .308 is very forgiving when it comes to loading and is the easiest cartridge to load that I've seen.

You may find the 180 gr bullets don't stabilize in a 1:12.

Thanks Joe. I have never loaded for a 308, nor do i own one, so i Know nothing about bullet and powder combo's. I just figured id help him out some a show him the ropes since hes knew to loading all together

I got to mess with my buddies gun today, and worked up some loads with it. Mixed results.I have a load shooting decent for what i had to work with.

165 gr nosler BT
44 gr varget
OAL 2.850

It doesn't have good scope, and i didn't have a very solid rest, but i could tell there was very good potential there. Without it being my gun, its hard to tell him what the gun itself needs, but he seemed happy. Ill mess with it more another day when i have more time. I really need an OAL gauge in my near future.
