Howa Heavy Barrel Varminter

hat are your thoughts on howa rifles? I was looking specifically at the heavy barreled varminter model. It looks nice but I have never fired a howa. How is their durability, accuracy, etc...

I have a Howa Heavy in .308. It is a very consistent gun. Hot, cold, clean, dirty, it doesn't matter. It just shoots no matter what. I have had several other Howa's that I traded off for the next best project and I regret getting rid of them all. The .308 will go nowhere and will go to one of the kids someday.

The triggers on the older models were hit and miss. My .308 is fine. Others I put Timney in. The new triggers are nice from the limited samples I have seen.

I have a Howa 1500 SS Varminter(Heavy SS barrel), in .22-250 Rem.
I won it at a DU banquet, and FWIW, most DU won guns
end up traded or sold...I still have this one. I have this
one set up in a B&C vented heavy varminter stock, with a
Nikon Buckmaster 6-18x scope. It shoots my hand loaded 50 gr.
V-Max loads into sub-MOA groups. It gets used mostly for
WY P-Dogs, during my antelope hunting trips. Excellent
colony varmint gun. I don't think I would want to haul it
around for calling coyotes, but it wouldn't be too bad, if
I swapped out the stock to a sporter variety. Nice accurate
rifle.

I had one in 22-250 and it would shoot 50gr vmax awesome. I also shot the winny white box great. I wish I had never sold the rifle, only downside is that it is very heavy to carry.

I have 4 heavy barreled models. .222 (S&W), .223, .243 and .308

All are excellent shooters for me and have a nice fit and finish to them.

Triggers are easy to work on and accuracy is pretty easy to find. I would recommend them any time.

Thanks for all the replies. I am trying to find a beat around gun, something that is not too expensive, that fits the bill of not beeing too heavy to lug around yet not too flimsy with a tiny pencil barrel. Not that there is anyting wrong with sporter barrels but, I just prefer to have the option of shooting a string of 5-10 rounds during a range session without having to wait 20 minutes between strings. It sounds as if the howa heavy barrel varminter might be a pretty decent fit for this task.

I have a feeling that after you get a Howa, it wont be the "beat around" gun your looking for. They are a Weatherby is disguise. Smooth action and shoots like a lazer.

I've owned and still own Howas. By far great shooting rifles. And I know this might chap some die hard Rem and savage guys. But for me the Howas out of the box have shot better than any Rem or savage put of the box rifle I've ever owned. Now let the arguing begin.
