Howling at midday

Hi guys, Does anyone have any luck howling at midday? Do you ever get a response? Do they come-in to your howling? By the way I'll be hunting Michigan.

savagegns,
Coyotes don't howl back during daytime very often in my area, but they will still come in. I use combination of howls and prey distress.

Trapper,

I have tried howling and distress but now luck yet. Im using and e caller. what type of sequence do you usually do and what type of calls are you having luck with?

thanks

Guys,
Nothing is carved in stone when it comes to calling coyotes. I like to begin with a lone howl, usually two or three of them. Wait about two or three minutes and then repeat. Wait another two or three minutes and then start the prey distress. If I get a vocal response to my howls, then I try to imitate what the coyote just said. Most midwestern and eastern coyotes come in silent (no vocal response) during daytime calling.
Good luck. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm just curious if you guys have started a calling stand with howling and had a coyote within 100-200 yards that you did not know was there when you setup? Did it respond positively?

Do you open up with howls regardless of visibility?

I have been openning with a low volumn prey species when I can't see very far and then howling after about 10 minutes of silence after my first series. Any suggested improvements for calling sequence?

Thanks for all the information.

I've been reading these posts daily ... wish I could make it to the LBL. Maybe next year.

Scout22,
It sounds like you are hunting heavy brush country. Coyotes will come real quick if they are gonna come. I usually begin with a howl or three, but your method does make sense. I would like to suggest that you first series be done with a call that is not real loud, and a sound that other callers in your area are not using. A hand squeak or a lip squeak comes to mind, or maybe one of those little Burnham "mini-squeal" calls. Five or six squeals to begin the stand, followed by three minutes of silence. No customers after three minutes? Two or three lone howls followed by another three minutes of silence. Still no customers? Howl again, wait three minutes and then give em some real loud prey distress screams. I like to use puppy squeals myself, but I know at least one feller who is having good luck with jackrabbit sounds. No jackrabbits in your area? The coyotes will not care, and will still come to the jackrabbit sound. It is just lunch to the coyote. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
