Pilgrim, coyote hunting is like fishing for bass you just have to keep using different bait until you find out what they are hitting on, and sometimes they are just not hitting. Howling at night works, maybe not as good as during the daylight hours but it does work. My favorite sequences for night are pretty much same as for daylight. #1 Lone Howl or Challenge Bark Howl wait 2-5 minutes then go to distress sound of choice depending on your area. #2 Lone Howl or Challenge Bark Howl wait 2-5 minutes then do a series of quick barks and yips (high pitched)(like a dog that has a rabbit in a bush but can`t get to it) wait 15 to 30 seconds and go to distress sound. Sometimes during the above sequences if I have been there for 10-15 minutes I will quit the distress sound and go to a kiyi(hurt dog) for remainder of stand maybe 1-2 series of kiyis. One more thing If you get an answer to your howl or challenge try to repeat back exactly what the coyote answering you does IMMEDiately and if the coyote keeps answering back keep answering him. If the coyote answers once and doesn`t answer again go to the distress sound after 2-3 minutes. One more thing I have been trying here lately is exchanging howls with the one that answers me a couple times then getting quite for 3-5 minutes then going to distress sounds. Pilgrim these are just a few of the many ways you can change up your act to fool coyotes sometimes they work and sometimes they don`t the main thing is keep trying. If you play it they will come.
