Howling

Walked out the ridgeline with my old Schnauzer this morning for our walk and thought about howling a friendly greeting howl with my voice since it was so still and no wind. With no thought, I just howled a long flowing tapered off howl and was immediately answered by an Old Yote half a mile away on the eastern ridge. He was answered by another dog what sounded like a 1/4 mile from and then a group of Yotes where the first old deep barking and howling yote first answered. I left it alone and did not howl anymore. The ridge has houses within another 1/4 mile so I am thinking of slipping in there with a Shotgun or a Bow and trying for that old dog in the next week or so. I really enjoyed this event and will never forget it but I would say these dogs have never been educated or pressured by any hunters.

I routinely get replies to my voice howls. About half the time I try it. And I sound like an old coyote that smokes too many cigars and sips too much whiskey. I'm sure that's what I smell like too.

Getting a response is always a lot of fun.

Around here it's been a bit slow, I dont know if it's because there are a few more coyote hunters before or that wolves are working their way into my area but last winter there was a month I didn't hear a single howl and for full moon night hunting that is really poor. This December has been a bit better already and I havent started hunting much.

There has only been a time or two in my life that I have heard a coyote during day light around here though.

Coyotes used to howl daylight or dark on the ranches I hunt, but have gone pretty much silent in the daytime and not as vocal as they were 15 years ago at night. Suspect it is due to increased pressure on them.

Regards,
hm

I howl pretty regular and often get a reply.
Sometimes one that replied shows.
About a 1/4 of the time a silent one comes in from a different direction.
It is very exciting seeing one show up in the rearview looking intently like the truck is not even there.
Now the truck severely limits shooting angles making it a contorted shot.
A recent one had coyotes simultaneously coming from three directions. I was still happy settling with one.

from a distance the howl sounds way better than you might think, besides coyotes howl pretty darn differently from coyote to coyote.

I doubt I will try it again in that area? May wait till the breeding is hot and do one challenge bark and sit it out. I am betting with so little pressure it will be a close shot because it is brushed in except for a high line clearing. Will also have to wait on a seldom east wind to be blowing or a dead zero wind notwithstanding thermals. Have seen two Bobs on my side feeding on my Bow killed deer entrails with binos. The rifle that would have reached them would really rock the ridge across the holler where the houses are located and ruin the hide so I just watched. Now I know why the Turkey poults I used to see in years past have disappeared.
