How is everyone's coyote population looking this year?
I have been pulling old fence and checking fence this last week and holy smokes! I seem to be tripping over coyote pups everywhere I go! They seem to be of that age where they are starting to explore a little bit.
Out here we have had really good rain to fill up the water holes and it has gotten hot enough for grasshoppers to show up in droves. I paused my fence check this afternoon to watch a pup jump and dive all over the place catching hoppers.
Having never seen so many puppies like this I'm apt to think that come fall the hunting is going to be pretty good! I'm excited!

Season doesn’t begin until October 1st here, but initial thoughts are a bit dismal. Hoping things pick up, but sign, sightings and vocalizations are few and far between. Hoping for a positive change.

To dang hot to even be out. In the mid to high 80s before the sun even comes up. Doubt the population has changed much considering we're in a multi century drought.

I took a trip to town and on the hiway where i used to see them dead along the road in double digits nary a one all summer. That doesn't bode well for this fall.

Road kill has been slim all across everywhere I've been all summer. Haven't heard many howling the nights I've been camped. Haven't seen much scat. Haven't seen many bunnies.

It ain't looking good.

AWS and I are more or less neighbors, so my experience mirrors his. I'm thinking it'll be pretty slim this year.

We have lots of rabbits, ground squirrels, rats, mice and quail. I see lots of coyote scat with fresh piles on the roads I have been walking on. It should be a good year for hunting coyotes around here.

I hunt in the big woods, and in this environment, squirrels and chipmunks are a significant part of coyote, bobcat, and fox diets. Over the last several years, we have had huge mast crops of hickory, walnut, and acorns, accompanied by a large population of tree squirrels. I could kill my ten squirrel limit with a .22 pistol without much trouble. Deer populations have also been up. However, this year looks like a bust for mast crops. That means there won't be a lot of squirrels in the woods. Hunting this year should be pretty good. Especially if a pocket of trees can be found that have mast. Next year will be a tough year for coyotes.

the hunting has been so bad since 2019 it feels like I have forgot how to call coyotes. lots of people seeing more cotty's not many more jacks. some have said more rabbits mean more coyotes or there is less coyotes around because there is more rabbits. I think both might be true. if its alot of jacks, you get alot of coyotes. if its alot of cotty's there isn't enough coyotes in the area to wipe them out and thus not that many coyotes.

Sorry to hear so many places not doing so well! I agree with not hearing vocalizations much this time of year though. My house is next to a cattle operation that sees lots of transient coyotes and fall winter they are non-stop but now we will go days without hearing anything.
Here the mice, bugs, and rabbit population are good which has things looking so bright but the deer numbers are way down and with so many deer killers up here I think the next few years may not be as good.

Apparently all coyotes have left all my properties. I heard a group a couple weeks ago and can’t relocate them to save my life. We’ve got fawns and young rabbits everywhere. Plenty of turkeys and quail as well. Can’t hear them or find a track anywhere right now. Dead deer and hogs get cleaned by buzzards and nothing else…cameras prove this.

we still have coyotes just not near as many. sometimes I wonder if they never learned what dying jack even sounds like. Maybe some sort of bug or grass hopper distress might be better

I should setup a microphone on a massive Mormon cricket march. They DO make some sort of sound, even with my nearly non existent hearing, I've noticed it. Hot new sound maybe? Lord knows, some of these lean years, the early season scats are nothing else but Mormon crickets. Which is good for early season, the pups have easy eating all summer. But, of course, the food disappears come winter and the late season calling is tough.

Hmmmm!!! Sounds to me like all the coyotes in the US joined Rosie O'Donnel, Jimmy Kimmel and Elenor DeGeneres and went to Alberta after Donald Trump was elected.
Honestly though it's starting to look like that. They all got tired of thermals and suppressors and migrated until they found a place with loud guns and peaceful nights 🤣
Maybe il start live trapping and exporting pairs of coyotes to everyone's hunting areas.
