That man is way too close to that snake,...he needs to be at least on the other side of a 12ga /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Hello,

I dont like to be critical of pictures but this one may be enhanced a bit. The snake stick is piercing the the snake, but there is no blood or internal debris on the end of the hook. Also the forward direction of the snake compared to the guy makes that sucker look larger than it probably is.

But what I dont really understand is that the proportions of the animal seem correct, which is rarely done with fakes. I use to be a avid herp collector before my stroke, and I never remember seeing a rattler that large even in my magazines.

Impresive picture anyways.

Thanks

The hook isn't piercing the snake it's skin is just overlapping it, if not that it's just covered by the shadow in the bend. Look at his snake pole they don't bend on small snakes. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif I've seen rattlers that big on dislpay lots of places in Texas and New Mexico. The proportions probably look real because it is real.

That is a big snake  BUT my snake pole is at least 3' and that one is pointed right at us so I think its a big snake but not that big /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I was giving some thought to going to Texas to do some hunting and calling. I think I just changed my mind. One more reason that I'm glad I live in far northern Wisconsin. Thanks!!!!!
Even if it's inhanced, closer to the camera or whatever--IT'S BIGGER THAN ANY DAMG SNAKE THAT I WANT TO SEE!!!!!!!!!!!

Trust me folks, that's a huge snake.
Notice that the pole is about level, on a line with his neck. Then consider the snake is curled in an "s" configuration. Stretch that puppy out and he's over six foot.

Also, a critical area to notice is the black and white stripes at his tail. If you've seen many western diamondbacks, you'll realize this one is big.

As to no blood on the hook, it was killed by a gun which left a rather large hole in his neck. The pole was place there after he bled out, which is not very much blood at that.

These big boys are kinda few and far between. Most are about 3-4ft long. I have a theory about these really big boys, they did not get that big by raring up at everybody they encountered. They lived a long time by keeping a low profile.

I'm not afraid of any snake, that I see first. When they surprise me I can leap a small house flat footed, turn around in mid-flight and shoot the mother. All before landing in a fast flight mode. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

First of all, the snake is not dead. If it were dead, it would not be "curling". Second, if it were dead, he woud not be holding it that far away from himself. The snake is very much alive and he's being extra careful! Notice the bend in the pole from where he's holding it to where the snake is. BOY'S, I'M HERE TO TELL YOU, IT'S A BIG SNAKE!

The snake is being picked up by a pair of snake tongs that act kind of like a big set of pliers. The tongs barely fit around the snake. I blew this photo up and counted 14 buttons on the snakes tail. Anyone that knows about rattlers knows that buttons always break off towards the back.

The fact that the snake has 14 existing buttons means it's an old snake and it is most certainly approaching if not exceeding the 6 foot mark, and where I come from, that's a big snake. I've taken a few from the Sierra Vista/Fort Huachuca area while I was the game warden there, and yes, they do grow to 6 feet in length.

For a rattle snake to grow that large, there has to be plenty of moisture and rodents around. The largest snakes I retrieved were most always found near or around horse corrals where there was always quite a bit of feed around, thusly a large amount of mice and rats. Lotsa mice and rats=big snakes.

Boys thats the fakest pictures I've seen in a LONG time... I'm gonna super-impose my face next to Brittany Spears and post it for you guys if you're buying into that one.

EDIT: I'm not saying they don't get that big... I wouldn't know about that... I'm just saying that dude is cropped out of a picture and put into the background he's in. I'd bet Jeff Mock's paycheck on it!

if you look close at the snake up on the first post his rattle don't look very big ?

and as for the white and black ring on the tail
can you tell me how that tells there big or not?

Two weeks ago near Burnett, TX, I was setting up my deer blind and came across one that big. Believe me these are not that common. I am 5'8" and when I held him up by the tail with just his head touching ground, my arm was extended up as far as I could reach. I figured him at about 6 1/2 ft long. I could not reach any higher because he was so heavy. He was thicker around than my forearm. Have seen at least 4 or 5 this big on our ranch in the past 10 years. As said before, most are 3 to 4 ft long.

Back in my younger days, and stupider, I saw one about 5 1/2 ft and buddy with me dared me to cut his rattles off with him still alive. I did and then, the stupid part, let him go. I sweated that area for the next two years. Dumb, Dumb, Dumb!!!!!

I got that same picture back in January of this year.

Supposedly they had caught this thing last year. The specs on it were 7'2" long, 15 buttons, 2 inch fangs, head was as big as 1.5 Skoal cans, and it was alive in this picture as they were gonna keep it and sell it at a Rattlesnake hunt.

I have captured at least 4 or 5 that were over 6 feet in length. Your probably not going to find one that big out in the open desert, but you sure might at higher elevations. Sierra Vista is at about 5000 foot elevation, and they have some pretty large snakes! In the deserts of Phoenix or Tucson, 3 feet is about the biggest I've seen. That snake is at least 5 to 6 feet long, and sure isn't dead.

Remp, that's is a great looking mount. I guess these guys that have never actually seen a 6 foot rattler won't believe it until they do. Tell me what you think about that snakes size.

Shoot, Joel Hughes is from Erath County. If that snake was caught there I bet he or his family has heard about it.

Keep the pics coming guys....I like these snake pics!

Take care and God Bless,

Rusty

I used to take snakes to the rattlesnake roundup in Sweetwater(largest rattlesnake roundup in the world), and I've seen several snakes that big. The ones around here sometimes do reach 6 feet,in fact we've taken a few in years past. Typically, those south Texas rattle bugs are bigger than ours, I know for a fact that we have 6 footers, and would easily believe that snake was over 6. Randy

I have seen and killed rattlebugs that big on a place I have permission to hunt on in south Texas near Encinal, close to Laredo. Rattlebugs are not to be played with, I think some of these guys are crazy, as long as there is a #4 shot between me and it I am comfortable. Last year my fathers friend was hit by a 5ft'er and it knocked him off his feet. He said it felt like someone took a 2X4 and broke it over his leg, and this man was a big boy. 3.5 months later he was walking again. I am always careful going out hunting at night so I dont get hit by one of them...damn I need to find out where the nearest hospital with anti-snake is down there.
