hunter orange for yotes

how do you michigan guys or anybody from a state that requires hunter orange for coyotes go about this, does the orange really make a difference for yotes?

Orange ain't great, however, it is the movement on the stand that'll bugger coyotes out and catchin' another gear. Sit still... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I have had several close encounters with coyotes while deer hunting in blaze orange and on every occasion, if I stood still they seemed to have no more recognition of the color than deer do. I just don't think they see it. What I do believe is that if your blaze orange drastically contrasts with darker clothing it will stand out more. I tend to wear blaze orange with lighter camo patterns such as Open Country, Mossy Oak Bottom Land, Prairie Ghost, Realtree Extra Gray or tan solids. These are the normal patterns I wear in Western Kansas for coyote calling. Dark patterns such as Break Up, Hard Woods, and Seclusion are worn for turkey hunting or woods predator calling.

tripod-i find your comments interesting...we are not required to use blaze orange yet...i have considered it for my safety coyote calling during during big game season...i believe you for some reason that color must not seem to bother them...thats also why i have become less hung up on camo...

I like many of the camo's offered now and buy my wife whichever ones she likes cause she hunts with me. However camo in itself is not the only deal to me. It is noncontrast or blending that works in my mind. And Yes keeping still along with low volume odor. Usually my back is up against something and I'm sitting with a gun, calls, face net, and sticks so you don't see much orange anyway. If the books are right, these pics demonstrate similar to what many animals see. My wife was happy to model this down coat in the sun today.

I hunt private land only in Southern Michigan, our farm is about 120 and have 7-8 others I hit hard after deer season is over. I am up on the rimfire or shotgun laws after dark, but I guess I am not up to speed on the orange law. I thought we did not need it when predator hunting unless it was during deer season. You cant even shoot yotes during rifle season in the UP IIRC? I guess I am going to pull out the rule books, I just might be an outlaw according to the dnr. I usually dont wear it when predator hunting. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Thanks, that is one example of contrast. Some say most camo is to dark. That coat looks better in the timber or rocks. We have mossy oak brush that looks much better in the sage, oaks or dry timber.

If the info on PM is accruate, go to "Articles" then scroll down to "Canine Color Vision". This states that the yote sees orange as almost a drab green. Orange should be an enhanced camo if patterned right. Check out the article, pretty interesting stuff. If I read the reg's correctly, we only have to wear orange after Aug. 15th. From July 15 to Aug 15 it's all green. Then from Aug until April it's in orange. Nothing to get in July except a small yote for a decoy,,,, if you want to use one.

brdeano, the hunter orange law for MI says that "you may not hunt w/any device, or trap w/a firearm , on any lands during daylight hunting hours from August 15-April 30 unless you wear a hat, cap, vest, jacket or rain gear of highly visible color, commonly referred to as hunter orange." We are not allowed to hunt coyote during rifle deer season in the UP of MI. I guess that the wolves need the extra protection. MI VHNTR

I still cant believe I have done all my yote hunting with no orange, glad I am up to speed on that /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif. I do wear it when on public land but I just did it to stay a little safer /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif. Having your own land kind of spoils you. I even get to legally use screw in tree steps on all my bow stands. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

mi-yotes, I am outside of swartz creek.
