Hunting by the barometer.

Does anybody use the barometer in any way coyote hunting? I've experimented a little bit with it and it seems like they become silent a little above 30 inches. I'm not really sure the threshold but it's somewhere right above 30. I can't even get them to howl to a locator at night. It also seems they are harder to call in and when they do come in it's silent. I've only been paying attention for a couple of months so it could be just the time of the year or could be more to it. Maybe somebody else can chime in.

You may be right, I don't follow it. This is the dispersal time of year. It's been my experience the young dogs moving around may be a bit nervous of sounding off.
Hungry is still hungry, and in another month or so territorial boundaries and the oncoming mating season shake things up.

Watch the weather fronts. Leading edge of the low pressure system moving in is best, followed by a low pressure system parked over you. Right after a bad storm can be good, but it will not last for long as high pressure stabalizes.

If the pressure is dropping, hunt, hunt, hunt. If pressure is rising, fish, scout, but do not call.

We had a barometer in the truck. Some hunts end up scouting trips or just getting out after a long week at work.

So, pay attention if you are just educating coyotes. Predators do not hunt during high pressure systems as a rule, so if they hear a screaming sound, they learn that the sound is a MAN!

I have read numerous articles that dogs can smell better at higher barometric pressure.

Maybe coyote hunters have better success during low pressure fronts BECAUSE the coyote's sense of smell is not as good?

Maybe during high pressure fronts, they are just busting us at a farther distance away and we are not seeing them?

Something to consider.

I always did the same as you reb8600. But I've always noticed somedays they won't come in or answer no matter what you try, then other days you have a lot of success. It's the same with deer hunting. Some days they are everywhere, then some days you don't see any. It has to be something that is telling them. I can see it with Whitetail Deer every day. We are over ran with them. Some days I'll see dozens. Somedays it's like they have all disappeared. I know some people go by minor and major feeding times for calling but that doesn't explain everything.

hunt right with the wind and not worry about that.

I'm with Rem600 you can't kill them if you stay home. So some days one shows up the next five. One is better than none while sitting on the couch.

I've had days fishing Northern Pike where my arms get sore from catching them and it was suppose to be a bad day.

Its funny how things work out. Several years ago my hunting buddy was fox hunting, at nite, with someone else and I was hunting alone, they saw nothing and I had a great nite. The next day he said it was the pressure or something because nothing was moving. I didn't have the heart to tell my buddy about my nite. We were only about 2 miles apart.
I say just go and if you have a slow day it will make the good days seem even better.

I’m with Mark, I wanna go, I go. Can’t knock down coyotes from the couch.

That being said, I have a competitive nature and I want to good at what I do. I noticed patterns to coyotes. I can call them in just about any day but some days were better than others. On good high pressure days they seem to roam quite a bit more. On the leading edge of storms they seem to be very responsive like they are actively hunting before the storm.

So while I will go out on just about any days I know I will have more success and more action on those days.
