What tactics? Is it hopeless? Unethical? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Well, I haven't hunted them in the past couple years after March 1st, but this weekend we had to drive to Reno for a wedding and I just couldn't go through all that country and not make a couple stands. Worked out pretty well too. Made 4 stands and killed a coyote in the same exact spot on Friday and Sunday, one 5yds from the other. On Friday we spotted a pair out mousing in the snow and managed to sneak in and call them in with Prairie Dog distress to 40yds, killed one. On Saturday we spotted another pair in the same spot out mousing and chasing a bald eagle off of the carcass from Friday. We managed to sneak in and started with a bird sound, they got interested but then shut off and went the other way, joined up with a 3rd coyote and left town. In desperation I played pup distress and some lightning jack and then had a 4th coyote come from over a mile away across the snow on full run. We shot him 5yds from the already dead one. One was a female that showed no signs of being pregnant and the other was a big male. Got some awesome footage on both hunts of coyotes pouncing on the snow and wrestling with each other.

Is it hopeless? NOPE

Tactics? Two dead ones still liked distress sounds

Unethical? That's a personal decision that you have to make

What's the old GI saying..... "Smokem if you gottem"...

Yes I heard that term used many times in the military. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

However in 2008 I don't know that I'd smoke em around folks who don't, somebody might get angry.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

so reading all the past forums about springtime hunting and the whole can of worms that opens up, my summation was that for you guys that "don't" being that it is CRUEL, does it make it less cruel in December when the pelts are prime and there are potential dollar signs spinning in your head? or does the Spring turkey hunt make it OK for future generations of Turkey, or Spring Bear hunt for what potentially could be a sow with hidden cubs, or Spring ground squirrels/PD's that potentially could have offspring in the dens? or Spring Ravens/Crows that could have eggs back in a nest? etc, etc, etc. Soreloser said a couple posts back he had an opportunity to hunt and got a few coyotes. His choice, his actions. I got 6 these last two days, who knows, maybe I got 18 potential ones? (and the ranchers love it.) I hunt with a purpose, not for the sake of just killing for the fun of it, and a consequence may be taking future generations out as a result of my choice to hunt in the Springtime, but so does the deer hunter who fills his DOE tag in the Fall and Winter or the Bear hunter in the Spring, etc. etc. etc...........
I applaude you for stating you DON'T hunt in the Spring for predators, but this is also a forum for educating those that have not been as successful as some of the more experienced here, and to say Springtime is not worth going out or tactics don't work anymore,or you pose your "ethics" on someone asking questions, how do you know, you stated you don't go out in the Spring! I probably get more coyotes in the Spring than anytime of the year combined, even winter. I don't do anything different, I am just more successful when the opportunity presents. ( Nevjohn/dogboy - I am not responding to you directly, just how the system posts after the last person)

The way I look at it, I am still not good enough at this to be a threat to the coyote population at large. They probably stand a better chance of getting run over as they cross the interstate freeway. Heck, some days, they stand a better chance of being abducted by aliens!

That being said. If I could tell a wet female coyote was coming to the call, I would probably pass on the shot.

If I ever get really good at this, I might change my mind.

man this is always a touchy subject. on one hand if you do go out and kill some pregnant female you are killing potential dogs to hunt come end of summer,to some people this is a good thing,to the guys who sport hunt coyotes only this is bad. you have to make a judgement call for yourself. as far as tactics go i couldnt tell ya, i havent been able to buy a coyote on the last few trips(probably cause i suck!!!) but they still gotta eat so i would say stick with distress calls. good luck

Everybody hunts coyotes for selfish reasons, the pelt guys want money, spring summer hunters do it for fun. Alot of us hunt coyotes whenever we can, some of us video, but all of us are coyote hunters and we should all support our tradition and sport. That being said 5 min of high pitch cottontail, and 10 min of coyote pup distress works wonders right now. in a month canine puppies with pup distress will really killem, and my favorite place to mule deer hunt is about to get a workin over because I may draw my big mule deer tag in 5-6 yrs and I want that unborn fawn to make it to adulthood. See Im selfish /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif but thats just me. Good luck and good calling guys, Al.

Fishing has been slow here so I am thinking of going out with my bow, to get some coyotes I am sure that I will have no impact on the population with my bow, unless I get real lucky LOL.

Couple of the posters here I'm wondering how responsible these gun owners are ?Half the fun to me is being on a mini vacation from work and being out in the sticks ! Get angry over spring yote hunting?Taking things a bit too serious. So if you find a hunter in what you call your area ( Do you own this area?) Do our 2nd amendment rights give you special authority to enforce your ethics on other hunters? What are you going to do take a hostage? Hold them at gun point? You better be careful because you might wind up in Hand Cuffs and/or sued up one side and down the other. In state of CA and NV its open season year round. Now if you have a badge and you tell me to "beat it on down the road" I'm gone.Dang I don't want any trouble on my vacation.

This is only my second year hunting coyotes and I have had a horrible year. It is almost depressing just thinking about it. I keep wondering if I’m doing something wrong or maybe I’m just trying to hard. Either way, I’m still going to hunt during the spring.
I’m not going only because I have had a bad season; there are a few reasons why I plan to hunt for a few more weeks.

See I have been working 12 hour days for over 9 months. I get up, go to work, get home, eat, work from home for a few more hours, go to sleep, then back at it again. Needless to stay I need something to take my mind off of work and my new passion, coyote hunting, helps me decompress and relax. I was out this past weekend, skunked again but on my last stand when I was about to call it quits I just stop, looked around and realized how peaceful it was. I ended up just sitting there for over an hour watching and enjoying Mother Nature. That last hour made my weekend.

One other reason I will be out this spring is the land I purchased over a year ago has a bigger coyote problem then I realized. The coyotes have put a major hurt on my deer population and I want to do something about that.
