Hunting Coyotes in the Day

I live in PA and most of the time i will have to hunt will be in the day. I just got a new foxpro spitfire and im itching to use it. So would i have any chance by hunting them in the day here in PA or should i focus more at night. ...i would have more chances to get out during the day due to my work hours. Thanks for any input

Coyotes will answer calls any time of day, They are not the type of animal to pass on a free meal or fail to defend their territory. Get out there and call, just don't forget to keep your expectations reasonable and have fun!

Watch lunar tables for prime movement times. This could be smack dab in the middle of the day. We also call into bedding areas when we think they are down, and have quite a bit of luck waking them up for a free dinner.

Hunter87, I'm in Ohio and do all my calling during daylight hours. I've never been out calling at night. I just have a thing about night hunting.(I like to sleep) That said, I usually have my best responses at first light and at dusk. I've called them in at high noon and about all hours in between, but I wouldnt trade the first hour of daylight for the rest of the day.
Good luck and stay with it, you will get out of it what you put in.

How do the lunar tables work? I see them all the outdoor magazines and it briefly describes how to use it but I dont understand it. Are they really that helpful?

Both day and night have there own advantages . From my experience days works best in my area due to thick cover and lack of good night setups . Although I would call more in at night I've found its much easier to get busted at night. Daytime less action but easier to make a clean shot when one responds. The first two hrs and last hour of light is best but later in the season cold temps anytime is likely. I've found waiting a couple weeks after big game is the way to go . too much human activity and probably food in the form of gut piles and lost game in the northeast . Try setting up on the edges of thick bedding/security cover.
Probably the biggest obstacle in calling coyotes especially during the daytime in states like Pa and NY is listening to people tell you you're wasting your time. Or my favorite "the coyotes are too smart in my area " that's what a defeated hunter will say . Just keep at it and be Flexible..good luck

i live in arizona and we are not allowed to hunt at night. it sucks but i call in the morning till the sun goes down and from what ive seen in the winter they come in all day long

I call so that I can photograph them so am limited to good daylight hours. I have had some pretty good response so far and I too just got a Spitfire. Called just one in to camera range last week but got loads of howling responses from the more educated coyote crew.

Let that Spitfire do its thing!

I won't say you are wasting your time calling in the day but it can be tough here in the northeast, at least in NJ and eastern PA where I hunt. You will have much better response at night.

That having been said, I think coyote response differs in the varying regions so you might want to give calling a try during the day. If it doesn't work then switch your tactics to night calling.

Like swampwalker said, "Be flexible."

Pay no attention to Lunar/Solar tables or time of day. Get out and hunt whenever you get the chance. The only sure thing about coyote huntin is you can't get one sittin on the couch at home.

We hunted all day Friday and didn't start seeing critters respond until 1200pm.. After that things were pretty much wide open until dark.

I agree with "t/c223encore". Get out and hunt when ever you can. My brother and I do all of our hunting during the day. You'll find something to call in, but not if you don't go.

So far this year, I have had excellent luck in the first 2 hours of daylight. The rest of my day pretty much stinks until an hour before dark. I have called in coyotes almost every morning I go out. If I have the whole day to myself, I will stay out all day, but I will have had more opportunities in the first 2 hours than I will have had all day combined. Usually after 10 AM it starts to get tough.

Monday, we called only 1 coyote before the lunch hour. At noon, coyotes turned on and we didn't have a blank stand till sunset. Yesterday, we called from sunrise to sunset and never drew a blank stand. Coyotes were howling all day long. Love them both, but Day calling is definately my choice over Night calling.

That has got to be some kind of a record. Then again, your definition of a blank stand must be different than mine.

1. How many stands did you make?

2. How many coyotes did you kill?
