When hunting in Va, try to find open areas. Fields and old stripmines are productive. Try to find brushy areas as well. Go out at night and do some howling. THEY WILL RESPOND. Not always, though. I have found that they are most responsive on warm, clear, calm, full moon nights.
Try to set up in the corners of fields when hunting.
As far as calling goes, you cant go wrong with your basic cottontail, pup, flicker, etc. If you want to use an electronic caller, I highly reccomend the Johnny Stewart Preymaster. For closed-reed handcalls, try the Johnny Stewart PC-7 and PC-3. The Knight and Hale Fawn Bleater makes a good fawn and an excellent cottontail distress. For open-reed handcalls, the Primos regulator 10 and Critr' Call standard are great. I called in my first coyote with the critr call standard, and he came in she came in with her boyfriend. Or you could get one of my custom open reed calls. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif . lol

Just because you're in woodlands and it is thick, don't try and sneak in on top of them. They will still bust you. THINK BIG NOSES. Back off from your suspected honey hole, and once again because it is thick, go loud with a call that has some reach, such as the Burnham Bros Mini Blaster. Heavy cover will suppress any sound. If they are there, they will hear you. I was suprised at how far they will travel indicating they heard that Mini Blaster. Try and find a set up where you have some visibility.
Start out with the Mini Blaster then go to a more subdued call, not as loud. Lots of guys start out with the Mini Blaster then go to the FoxPro which is somewhat removed from you, using a remote. The Mini Blaster will pull them alot farther than you may think. Once it turns their heads and starts em coming you can sing somewhat softer.
In Virginia the key is finding any amount of a concentration of coyotes to call. Most are just spotted on their travel routes. Burn some shoe leather and find their core area.
