I shot my first Yote in a rainy/sleety day. The stand was about 30 minutes and it took almost all of that 30 minutes to get one to come in. We had fresh snow on the ground from the night before with plenty of sign but the yotes wouldn't come in. Juveniles are more prone to show up at odd times but seeing the biggins and fox/cats it usually takes the right weather. On days its too rainy, I go duck hunting. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
I was with Freeloader when we called thjat dog in in the rain. From what he said (I couldn't see it- I was facing the other direction) the rain didn't bother it much. Not including this time, I have been on two other outings where yotes have responded in the rain.
I killed my second coyote in a light rain about 2:30pm in the evening. He was on his way to visit my chickens for a quick snack. He was a young coyote maybe a year and a half or so.
Here in Washington we hunt in the light rain all the time, it doesn't seem to bother the dogs here. I love shooting coyotes in the rain, there's just something about the cloud of mist that goes flying off their fur when a 55 grain BTip smacks them that I truly enjoy. I usually hold off in anything more than a sprinkle unless I'm looking to shoot crows. I've also found after a rainy night the dogs are out longer in the morning and the spot and stock hunting can be fantastic. I guess they either stay out to warm up and dry off, or they stayed in during the rain and they're hungry. Either way it's a good time to let the air out of one!! ~6mm
Yep, lite rain is OK, I especially like to hunt after an all nite hard rain, when it is still misty the next morning.
Seems they are really on the prowl, and readily come to the call, besides the fact they hunt longer into the day before napping.
sometimes (rarely) it rains here, and ive discovered that animals stay out in the open all day during rain. i dont know about heavy rain because i wouldnt bother going out in it, but animals seem to like drizzle, it might be different in places where it rains often though, i really dont know.
