hunting on ATV's

Do any of you use ATVs to get from ane stand to the next? I have 4 that I can use any time but I dont know if I would scare any dogs off as loud as they are. Before anyone gets fired up, I have no intention of chasing yotes.

I have one that I intend to use. My plan is to park the F350 Powerstroke Diesel and go in the 4 wheeler. I still intend on walking the final several 100 yards.

WE use ours all the time, They are lower to the ground then the trucks and easier to hide. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif GENE'O

I've taken mine out a couple of times, it is nice to move from stand to stand quickly, but then I forgot why I go hunting.... to get exercise.

I use my Honda ATV to get around. I don't go very fast to keep the noise down. I walk from 100yds and beyond. It really depends on the terrain you are hunting. Flat country I walk further and more contours I don't need to walk as far.

I have stated this before, but I believe by adding a silencer to the exhaust system you really can be quite "stealthy" with your ATV. I purchased a Benz Silent Rider for both of my Hondas and would nver hunt on an ATV without one installed.

I have some amazing stories about how quiet that make the rig.

Just stick with the truck.... It can get you too more good calling spots than u realize. Also when it is -14 out like it will be on my first stand tomorrow I garunntee I wil enjoy crawling in the cab to warm up even if it is only 5 minutes to my next stand. I am not a real big fan of atvs. But they can be used for calling.

elks-
-14..... My kinda hunting. The wife thinks I'm nuts, but I try to tell her that is when everyone else stays home. The colder the better.
Good luck in the morning.

Im 14, so I take mine everywhere. If you have a shifter, go in not your lowest gear to keep it quieter. You can also get a lot of places, especially with the lift kit and snow tires like ours, right after a big snowstorm that a truck couldn't dream of going into. They're quicker on small roads too.

WE do 95% of all our hunting with quads. Everything from deer to varmits. We have all the Polaris sportsmans. 330 up to the 800. All camoed, all with gun boots, winches, etc. And we should be getting our new little Ranger in any day.. Some ranches we hunt you arent allowed trucks, so a quad is a neccessity. Plus where we up most places are remote and vehicle acess is limited. But a quad can go just fine. With proper ompa lompa suits you can be quite toasty. Plus heated grips help too LOL Personally I wouldnt be without a quad.
Heres a pic of 3 of our quads /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I’m probably going to ruffle some feathers here but I’ve come to loathe Quad riders. I realize not every one is to blame but there are quite a few bad apples in the quad crowd that can't seem to stay on the roads.
I’ve hiked miles hunting through pristine roadless areas only to have quads come blasting by in a cloud of dust.
My favorite hunting grounds used to be completely devoid of quads. I could hunt for days and never see another soul except the guys I camped with. The quads have slowly busted a trail in further each year until they pass just feet in front of my tent, DISCUSTING. The big meadow that used to produce consistent big bucks is now the early morning commute for the quad idiots. The entire area has been conquered by the quad slobs and now an area that used to produce spectacular bucks now produces just average to small bucks.
I thought the country we hunted would be too tough for them to get into but I was wrong…Well almost, a few years ago one of the quaders was trying to climb a steep grade to our area when he flipped and killed himself (very sad).
Last year we finally bit the bullet and decided to hunt an area even more remote. It now requires a long boat ride just to get to camp. I hunted all week and never heard a single quad nor ran into another hunter, got a nice buck to. It’s only a matter of time though before they find a way into this spot as well.

I live near Valley Springs, 30 mins from Stockton, between Pardee, Comanche, Hogan, Amador lakes...

GUY- Sorry you feel that way.. THeres always a bad apple in the barrel of course. We see idiots on quads sometimes too. Tearing up land and not using the 2 tracks. But either way Id rather pack an elk on the quad than pack it on my back. Or hubbys back I should say.. And like you said quads can really go pretty much wherever you want.. (With skill of course)
WE do up in one area that only quads can get into. One climb is called the Widow Maker.. Its name is very accurate. It takes skill and power to get up it without flipping over. BUt the reward is big bucks and bulls of the highest caliber. Walking in is possible, but as high and remote as it is I have never seen anyone one on foot. ITs steep, 11,000 + ft elevation, and the terrain is extreme to say the least. Without a quad youd never see this place.
Hunting there is awesome.

Most of the time we get within 200 to 300 yards from the stand. ATV'S work real good in flat land areas. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif GENE'O

Hate em'! I've had nothing but bad experiences with ATV riders here in the National Forest. Nearly all of them are breaking the law in some manner or another. Most are rude and disrespectful of other hunters and most importantly, the land they ride upon. By and large the ones I've ran across, or, rather should I say ran across me, have been lazy slobs. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

While there are some people that use ATVs properly, there are far more around here that do not. I'm sick and tired of the trespassing, land destroying, law breaking idiots on their ATVs. These boneheads are the ones the will eventually ruin things for the rest of the law abiding ATV users. There's one good thing that will come of this though. There'll be a lot less hunters in the woods if the ATV users have to walk in for access. MI VHNTR

Plus everyone must keep in mind that public lands are not just hunting lands. They are there for everyone to enjoy in their own personal way which may not be your own but if you want someone else restricted be careful as your prefered use may be restricted or eliminated also. If you support banning atv's you may find that your beloved pickup could very well be booted out of the area at the same time. We have all seen vehicles of all sorts missused. The negative comments made to atv's here can often be said about the hunting community as a whole if not looked at with an open mind.As always common sense and tolerance is the best idea. Good luck and have fun.

GENE'O,
If I owned a quad this is the kind of country I would hunt. Looks like a real nice setup you've got there with my favorite kind of rifle in the rack as well /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif.
I'm not trying to impugn all quad riders just the slob kind that think the road less mountain areas are just another hill to be conquered.
By the way I went to college over in Nampa for awhile. Shot lots of Jack Rabbits and tons of Sand Rats over by Murphy and Reynolds. Gonna try to get over your way this spring to shoot Rock Chucks in the Craters of the Moon or down south towards Nevada. Most of southwest Idaho is perfect for quads so if you pull up to say howdy, I won't be hacked at all.

Joel.
