Hunting or shooting??

I don't know if this is the proper section to post this but if the moderators find it necessary they can move or delete it.

I read a lot both on the web and in print and have noticed what seems to be quite common these days. I've even read where some very experienced folk seem to think that harvesting game anymore is more "get 'em at all costs" in many situations rather than trying to outwit the animal in his own home. I personally try not to take game with a gun or bow unless I can get a good broadside rather than a neck, rump or you name it type of shot and can't count the number of animals I've passed because ot this. Am I way too conservative? I read about concern for ruining pelts if bone is hit etc. I also know of quite a few older folks who like to shoot but not hunt anymore because of this. Not trying to cause an argument but would like to know other's thoughts. Some of the things I read (especially on the web)and the types of shots taken just seem to fuel the anti's.

Interesting topic though it is Tox...you need to take this to the Member Club House.

This area is specifically for firearms and such.

I hear the same thing about my style of hunting, Its not hunting, its just shooting.
What is hunting? knowing the game and its habits well enough to place yourself in the right place at the right time to make a quick, humane 1 shot kill.
That is what I do except the range varies between my shots and the accepted average.
I have put well over 5k into 2 rifles, one to just shoot and accustom myself to doing the things I have to do in order to use my chosen method of hunting. I worked many hours over the past year working up loads tuning my rifle and abilities so that as season approached I could with confidance dial my scope to make consistant 1rst shot hits on a 4" circle out to 700 yds.
I had the best time I ever had hunting and out of 5 whitetails harvested all on the first shot, the average range was 483.5 yards. But some say I'm less of a hunter then the guy who sets in a treestand 50 yds from a feeder.
Oh well, I don't feel this is an unethical way to hunt as long as my rifle and I are up to the task.

i hunt just to be in the great outdoors killing something is not my #1 priority i enjoy being out there and watching what nature does without human interference and theres alot of people that feel the same way i do

I think this post does belong in here because rifles these days, with knowledgable shooters behind them are able to kill game out to 500+ yds with ease, even though I think that's a bit much, for anybody. I'm with Tox, in that I'm a bit conservative too. I don't even advocate the use of tree stands, and I often pass on iffy shots. I've heard stories from idiots that would make anybody's blood boil, throwing 12 gauge slugs at deer 400 yds away and crap like that.

I don't bash long range shooters though, they have obviously done there homework.
