Hunting Public Land in Ohio

I was just wondering if any one has ever had any luck hunting public land in Ohio? We recently hunted Woodbury Wildlife Area in Coshocton County and had no luck. Had a ton of sign, but produced no fur. We were thinking about hunting the Conesville Coal Lands in Coshocton and Muskingum Counties. Just wondering if it would be a waste of gas money or if it is worth a try. Thanks

I reckon Keekee is still on the road. That sounds like his type of hunting. Look for a few of Keekeeyelp's post and see what you can learn. From what I read of them it sounds like the trip may be well worth your time. Jimmie

We had red eyes lighting up on our first set-up this past Saturday within a few minutes of when we started calling. It hung up around 90-100 yards and I only had the 12 gauge. My guess is that it will only get better from here on out with this cold snap. We called in several last year in Northeast Ohio and all the way down around Tappan Lake. Last year was my first year calling and I did not take any other than during WV buck season.

Thanks for all of your input. Both are reclaimed strip mines, plenty of scrub brush and wooded draws. Plenty of rabbits and grouse to munch on. Woodbury is around 18,000 acres and Conesville is around 16,000 acres, so I think I might have to make a trip down this weekend to give them both a shot. I think I'll hike to the back 40 and try to find some uneducated yotes. That is if there isn't enough ice to go ice fishing. Have a good one, thanks again for the input. -Justin

Lots of the goverment land here in Ohio holds coyotes, most of it is good hunting. The main thing is you just haft to find them. Get in there and do some scouting and find the sign and find were they are spending there time and were they are holing up in the daytime! I have hunted alot all around the state and most of it hold coyotes. Some areas have alot more but you just haft to find them. They like the thick cover and clearcuts. The old strip fields make good hunting at night. The old strip mine lands hold alot of coyotes and fox.

Brent good to see ya on, i haven't been on in a while ,we are waiting to hear from the wifes grands. to see when the remodel is done so we could stay. I'll let ya know.If it works we can attempt that hunt we been thinking about for 2 years.AS far as public land I have heard yotes below the house on the state lake ground in the past.

ive killed a few coyotes on some ground up around athens this fall. it was zelaski state forest. i found out about it by some local coon hunters that were getting there dogs run out of the woods by coyotes each time they went in. so they took me up one weekend and showed me around and we ended up killing 3 dogs from that area in two weeks time. havent been back since but im a believer in gov. ground. large tracks like that are for sure holding some coyotes and fox.
