Hunting with jack russell

I just bought my first parsons jack russell. I was wondering what you guys are hunting with them who have them? I am hoping to decoy a few dogs with it. They seem to be a fun little dog. Thanks

They are fun little dogs but they think they're a whole lot
bigger then they are. Friend of mine just got his JR
chewed up big time when a couple of coyotes jumped it a few
weeks ago. Coyotes didn't even care that the guy was only
30 or so feet away. They tore that little dog up good.

The Parson Russel Terrier (aka Parson Jack Russel) is the show variety of the jack russel. I'm sure they still have the terrier hunting instinct that is so strong in a normal jack russel. Should do well, Kelly Jackson used a pair for a quite a while. One issue with a small terrier, is their ability to see over the grass or sage.

Just keep a close eye on him, so he doesn't get rolled up by a pair of coyotes.

Tony

I hear what your sayin on the grass and sage the mother is a jack and the father is a parsons I got a pup with the longer legs to help a bit

We raise AKC jack russels, use them for coon hunting. One on one, a coyote is in trouble, but two coyotes will tear one up. Ours have had run ins with coyotes over the years, but then again, ours are experienced fighters. Beside our walker hounds, they add a lot to a hunting wagon.

one on one they can handle a coyote? a shot coyote? a coyote with 2 or more walker hounds?a a denned coyote pup? a coyote you ran in a tube? i would love to hear more on the subject.

Varminterror-I'm a little curious how a jrt one on one with a coyote would even survive. Hard to believe that's possible.
Not impossible though as I'm rooting for GSP to beat Silva in a catch weight super match.

I was typing on my phone earlier (trying to be quick eating dinner with my mother-in-law), but we've had more than one occasion where JRT's have held their own with coyotes. No, I wouldn't expect a JRT to run down a coyote and kill it, but I know ours have fought off coyotes that mistakenly thought they'd make an easy meal. We've had 3 or 4 jacks (can't recall if we had Shredder at the time yet) drag dead coyotes back to the house, and have had them get a dog stretched before we could catch up and put a bullet in it, would only be a matter of time before it was dead, regardless of our presence. One of my b1tches killed a 35lb un-shot badger on her own while we were riding horseback once. Sure, it could have gone the other way with one wrong move though, a big digger is nothing to fool with.

Here's a pic of our crew a few years back:

3 adult dogs and two pups, a cold winter day and some abandoned buildings, pretty good way to kill an afternoon!

For the record, if GSP can handle the weight gain and overcome the reach, I think it's going to be a pretty d@mn good fight, but I do know how hard it is fighting up in weight vs dropping weight. Both guys are absolutely the top of the food chain, but I can just as easily see it being a circus rather than a good fight.

well i wont doubt ya but never heard of a jrt killin a coyote unless the coyote choked to death swallowing one.lol if you got one that that can hold a 35 lb badger without it digging away with your dog attached let alone killing it by herself then i wouldnt worry about no coyote either. heck most coyotes dont weigh 35 lbs. one question, the coons on the tailgate were they shot or did the jacks dispatch them?they sure are purty white dogs without a drop of blood on any of them. i do the same with my terriers and they normally look a little rougher at the end of the day.

The Parson Jack Russell isn't just the "show variety" of Jack Russells.

My daughter was wanting a puppy a few years ago, and to avoid getting some yappin' worthless toy breed, of which I'm SURE my wife would have steered her toward,...I kind of "guided" her into a Jack.

Anyway, from my research at the time,

There were some breeders and clubs that DIDN'T like the direction the Jack Russell was heading. Just like every breed that gets popular in this country, over breeding causes the breed to suffer.

So, the clubs and breeders WENT BACK to the original Jack Russell standards and adhere to them.
As a matter of fact AKC recognizes the Parson Russell Terrier and not the Jack Russell. I THINK the only kennel club that registers plain Jacks Is the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America. JRTCA.

So,In their quest to adhere to the old standards, they also hunt, and hunt test them. If you do a little research, you'll find a lot more hunting Parson Jacks, than plane or "Shorty" Jacks.
Just to be clear, these hunts and hunt tests are where they go in a burrow, or "to ground" for their game. And then I think the handler digs it up.

Now, I'm no expert. I just happened to do a lot of reading about both breeds before we bought Penny. And she's just a Jack Russell. And probably more of a "Shorty Jack".

I take her with me once in a while, but she doesn't have a clue what she's doing. And if a coyote ever did get ahold of her...goodbye Penny.

But...it'd have to catch her first! She's wicked fast!

That's my ¢.02!!

LOL. I was wondering the same thing. My terriers are tore up from the first stop of the season until denning is over in late July. Maybe I need to change colors of dogs.

No. MT kept me beyond busy denning and then it got real hot and I had a hard time getting motivated to head south. LOL. Just started planning a trip to southern CO in mid sept.

Hope all is well with you and the family.

Tim
