I got my FX3 and drives crows crazy!! But......?

I took my FX3 out today for the first time and tryed out my crow calls to see what would happen. These are the calls that I have for crows - crow fight, crow duet, dying crow, crow & owl, crow gathering, and struggling crow. I would like to get some help on how to use these calls and what order to play them. This is my first E-caller and I Luv It!!! I would also like to add new calls to my Fx3 and would like to know what else to get?

(Any Crow call Recommendations)?

I have never predatored or crow hunted before so any advice would help alot. I called in crows today using crow gathering and dying crow but couldn't get them to land or roost. I moved to several different locatons and one time I had 75+ crows flying around at high altituded. How can I get them to stay still long enough to get view shots off?

I really like what I saw today and hope to improve my skills and understanding of crow hunting ASAP!

Thanks for your time and responses!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif REM17

Working with the sounds you have I would start with the duet. You want them to respond a few at a time instead of en masse. But we also use shotguns & shoot them on the fly. The crow fight/gathering usually works all the time. But you get mobbed by it. The dyeing crow is used to pull the fleeing birds back for 1 more go round.

This is the way we do it but we use shotguns on the wing.

Shoot em out the sky! Shotgunning crows is FUN! Get some crow decoys to go along with the caller, camo yourself well and wait til they get in close before you move. I use the Ugly crow sound to get their attention then I will change to the crow fight or gathering depending on their repsonse, after some shooting Ill hit the ugly crow again and it seems to bring them back. Crow fight is a great sound as well and I will sometimes use a rabbit distress to get them really fired up.

One way to get them to land is to set your call under or close to a tall tree if its dead thats even better and play a rabbit in distress call and they will sometime circle then land in the tree to see whats up. Keep your eyes open for coyotes cause they will be coming to the call too.I usually crow hunt with a shotgun but when the coyotes are not cooperating if some crows happen to land if its safe to shoot I pop'em.

Add some johnny stewart crow calling sounds to your FX3. The crow and owl fight, crow and hawk fight and come here call should compliment what you already have. It also helps to have seperate hawk and owl sounds on the caller. Like everyone said a good rabbit sound will also work well. Good luck.

Rem17, you have one nice machine in that FX-3.

I know there are a lot of more experienced crow hunters than me, but I've used the Johnny Stewart Crow/Owl sound for near 40 years with great success. I haven't had as much luck with the Crow/Hawk sound. Right now I have a Fox Pro 416B and have Crow/Owl and Young Crow sounds. I generally start out with the Crow/Owl sound first and that brings in several. Then once I've beat them back pretty bad, I use the Young Crow and they generally go crazy and come back for more, squaking their heads off.

Like a lot of others, I too have had crows respond to a rabbit sound many times.

Good luck with your crow shooting. Keep us informed.

Are youusing decoys? I have luck with an owl on the ground and a dozen or so crow deeks in the trees around it with 1 or 2 on the ground.

I concure, JS sounds are hard to beat and are my "go to' sounds. Break out the shotgun and see how many ya can plant in a mornings, or/and seasons, time. High power fight sounds usually require atleast 2 guns to fully exploit the larger mobs that'll try to join the fight, but if ya slow it down with a gathering call or come here call you can slow the flow and extend your solo shooting.

Welcome to the crow shooting club!

welcome aboard Rem17,

ditto what others have said, shoot them on the fly with a hunting buddy of yours. dekes work well to keep the crows attention since they are so curious and territorial.

another secret of mine is next time you order a McDonalds value meal, save the bag, hamburger wrapper, and fries box. Set up some decoys in an opening yet near some tall trees. Place the McD's debris with the crows as if they were scavaging. (an old rabbit pelt also works well).

Crows always seem to want a free hand-out, and how many times have you seen crows in a fast food restaurant parking lot eating someones leftovers. The fry box is red and appears to peak the crows curiosity.

Word of caution, check your local state game laws as some states have seasonal dates for crows.

best of luck,

Mi Yotes, Sometimes I use decoys and sometimes I don't. I've killed a lot of crows over the years by just calling with no decoys. Sometimes I use an Owl decoy. I also have a mechanical crow decoy that has flapping wings. That one seems to work really well and keeps them squaking and interested. That has become my choice of decoy. Here is the one I now use quite a lot:

THANKS!! I bought a couple decoys today and hope to get back out this week to see what happens. I will be hunting a couple of corn fields with the FX3 for foxes and crows. I will try the call recommendation as well as the Mcdonals trick!! I think it's funny but I bet it works! After I kill a few I will ask them if they want fries with that!! HA HA!

I will keep ya posted and thanks again!! Rem17

6mm06, I just bought a crow buster 11 which I believe is the same as the black decoy in your picture. I haven't used it yet but really like the way the wings flap like the bird is trying to take off.

lonedog,

I'm interested in hearing how that decoy works for you. The one I have drives them absolutely crazy.

I tried it out in the back yard this morning. I was standing on my deck and put the Buster 11 decoy about 20 feet out in the middle of the back yard. I put my bandit M1 in a bush near the decoy and backed up to the house and turned it on. At first 2 or 3 crows came over the yard pretty high up then one of them spotted the decoy. He folded his wings and made a spiraling dive right over the decoy and landed in a tree. then he started calling like mad to his buddies. In no time there were 20+ crows diving and circling the area sometimes right over the decoy. Remember I was standing on the deck in plain view. in 45 years of crow hunting I have never seen anything like it. I am really sold on this decoy. Have you tried leaving one wing folded and using the decoy for predators ?

Lonedog

Yes, that's the way I use it - with one wing folded. That way rather than just flapping the wings, it goes round and round the stake as if it's an injured bird. Crows go mad when they see that.

My purchase from Decoy Heart came with two birds: one is the crow and the other is a light gray color similar to a dove. I have tried the dove for predators but haven't had any luck yet. But, I do think it will work good for them. It does make a little motor noise and I'm not sure if that will be a negative thing or not. I am thinking that maybe the call sound will override the motor noise. How about your's?

I love the decoy. I knew you would too once you got to try it out for crows. Glad things went well.

6mm06,

OK... Here goes $bob$ with dumb questions. What do you actually get when you spend the $50+ dollars? I'm confused. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Is it what's in the picture or just the crow or ??? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif
