Started the night out in the woods with shotty and daylight for 2 sets till dark. No takers. Drove 10 miles south and on the 1st set saw 3 about 3/4 mile away on the next ridge playing in a meadow. At about 30 min I got a single howl back to some pup distress from several hundred yards in front of me. Stayed there for another 35 min in silence and at 30 got "white" at the fence line--dang coon!
Drove south about half mile to the other side of this hollow for the next set that was uneventful except at my last pair howl at 20min when I get a pr/group answer me from where my first set was!!! That is the way it is here a lot of times but seldom can I sit in silence more than 30-40 minutes. Anyhow, after this set I drive to the next ridge east for my last planned set of the night.
Have only hunted this pasture once before and thought I had a good vantage spot picked out against the only clump of multiflora in the fenceline. Vid will tell why I have to get there in the daylight and "rethink" that decision. Wind quartering from my left and the farm house about 150yds to my right behind me on top of the hill so I got the call about 50yds at my 1:30. I howled a long invitation that was immediately answered straight in front of me from about 5-600 in the bottom of the hollow. I answered with another long series of howls, waited maybe 2 min then did a really long 3 breath series.
Almost immediately I see him crossing the pipeline on the crest of a hogback about 450 out. The woods he comes out of is just under 400 from me and the vid tells the rest. He pops up at about 40 and I can't believe he went almost 90yds with that exit. I didn't notice last night that the pic was blurry but his whole brisquit was gone! Big male, wish I had a scale.
