I Guess I'm a Contender Guy Now

Getting ready to move and took a load of stuff I am not taking with me to my local gun shop to do some horse trading. The owner had a lot of TC Contenders he wanted to move, so home with me they came. Last month, I had zero Contenders. I know have the following:

TC Contender with a 10" octagon .222 barrel and a spare 10" octagon 22 WMR barrel, both with rifle sights. The second Contender is a super 14" .223 scoped barrel and a spare TC Custom Shop 45/70 barrel with rifle sights that appears unfired. The third came with a scoped 12" .357 heavy barrel and a spare heavy .22LR barrel wearing an older TC Scope.

I will not have an opportunity to fire these for several weeks due to my move, but I do have several questions for the Contender faithful here:

1. My Super 223 currently wears a Nikko rifle scope that I want to replace with a pistol scope. I was thinking about one of the older 10x pistol scopes. The original rifle sights were also included. This will be a groundhog eliminator. Thoughts on scopes for this rig?

2. Anyone fire a 14" 45/70 contender? What is the recoil like and what ammo and/or hand loads do you use?

3. My 12" bull barrel .357 magnum will be a deer harvester. Came with a BSA Edge 2x7 handgun scope. I see a lot of people prefer red dots for deer hunting or fixed 2x scopes with a wide field of view. Thoughts from those who deer hunt with similar rigs? Also, what deer hunting ammo do you prefer for the .357 magnum?

4. The Super 14 .223 grip has no cap and it has a lanyard post protruding from the bottom of the wood grip. The 45/70 came with synthetic furniture and also has no cap and the protruding lanyard post. Where do I find the parts to convert back to a regular flat cap?

Well, I can see I will have enough to keep me busy once I get settled after my move! Thanks in advance for sharing your expertise with me regarding the Contenders. A good friend of mine warned me these are highly addictive and there is no known cure!

You might check with Ed's T/C's out of Oklahoma City. He's a big Encore and Contender guy. He has a web sight also, just google search it.

As far as 45/70 recoil? Look at the size of the bullet, then think about it. I think the answer will come quickly. LOL

I love the Contenders, for some reason even better than the Encore.

I had a 14" 45/70 and if you load it with full house loads, it's a handful. The way I was loading for it, I would say it's about like shooting a 500 S@W

I had a very sweet shooting Contender years ago, a 14" .223 that was amazingly accurate. I dropped a lot of groundhogs with that one. It wore a Burris 7x pistol scope. I miss it, should never háve traded it.

Also I had a 10" bull barrel .30 Herrett and a 10" .357 Maximum. They all shot good.

Good stuff. Enjoy.

The 10X IER Burris scopes are very critical in their eye relief.
For most beginners I would not recommend them.
The current 2-7, older 3-9's or the current 3-12 would be much better if you are going to use a LER scope.

I have several 14" barrels but I really like my 23" carbine barrels. Don't rule out getting the rifle stock and forend so you can make your contender a rifle.

The BSA will likely give up the ghost on you.
I prefer a fixed power scope or variable over a reflex or dot scope myself.

357 ammo using the Hornady XTP 158 or even the 140 would work fine

45-70 in the Contender can be vicious. The Contender cannot handle the same pressure that the Encore can or that rifles like the Ruger #1 is capable of handling

14" .223 and 13" .30-30 Ackely for me. Both are very accurate. I have a Bushnell Trophy 2-6 on the .223 and a Burris 2-7 on the .30-30 AI. I like both scopes, but give the edge to the Burris, but might not if I had an Elite instead of Trophy. That little .30-30 AI is a wonderful medium game rifle - works wonders on deer, antelope, and hogs with 125 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips.

I love contenders, encores not so much. All 14s for me.
35 rem 2x burris good for deer to 200
35 rem red dot tasco pro point 3mm dot good to 150 but good in cover and fast on target
223 2-6 bushnell good on varmints to 300 for me
22 lr squirrel gun.4x burris

Picked up a used Bushnell 3200 Elite 2x6x32 to try on the Super 223. Also, picked up a used Nikon Monarch 2x20 to try on the .357 venison harvester. Thanks so much for sharing your experiences and expertise with me.

Over the years I have had many flavors of Contenders from pistols lengths to carbines, from factory jobs to custom one off wildcats. Handloading for one will give you a whole new insight on setting headspace and COAL. Of my favorites

6mm 30-30 AI
.204 Ruger
.357 max
.221 Fireball

But so many more that were a blast (no pun intended) to shoot.
