The hogs are kinda scarce here in TN ... except in the kudzu patches along the sides of the road. Seems like any time I see several in a field the owner won't allow access. Do you have many in CT?

On a side note .... we might could organize a nutria hunt in Louisiana.

I actually saw my first woodchuck this year, standing straight up in that classical pose, on the side of I-91. This state used to be lousy with them.

If I get my boat running, it'll be a hoot to put some heartache on some Nutria!!

When I was a kid (30 years ago) we could go out on a sunday evening and shoot 20 of them. Now i have to hunt for them. Very few holes in the middle of fields anymore. It seems like they have smartened up and are digging dens in cover. I think the coyotes have had a huge impact on the numbers....good for farmers, bad for guys that like to shoot in the summer.

Any other ideas on why numbers are lower?

I am sure it is coyotes here in CT... they have been jumping back yard fences and running off with the family's poodle.

A few years ago, I took three long range rifles up to Vermont for a week.

Didn't see even one 'chuck.

I asked farmers and they said the coyotes are so bad that they can't let calves out in the fields until they are 1+ years old, and the calving pens have high voltage electric fence wire over the TOP of the pens cuz the coyotes are so aggressive..

It is badd up here.

I wish I could afford to move to PA or Ohio.

Uhhhhhhhhh, Shooter, why don't you get busy eliminating some of that coyote population? It's almost as much fun as shooting whistle pigs.

NOTHIN' IS AS MUCH FUN AS SHOOTIN' WHISTLE PIGGIES!!!

But maybe next year.... I know nothing about setting and calling, or how to pick the right spots - those that I have shot, have been because they walked into a meadow, stalking a 'chuck that I was puttin' a cross hair on... the wrong place at the wrong time

.

There are not a lot of 'yote shooters here. I think it is a cultural ting - CT is a VERY blue state - more blue than Mass or Kalifornia... so hunting in general is frowned on.

Guys shoot pheasants, doves and other birds, cuz it is a "gentlemen's game", but shooting 'chucks and 'yotes is just plain "killin' " and there is almost no deer hunting, even though they are at pest and predation levels here.

I am the proverbial fish out of water here (or woodchuck shooter out of chuck country

Nope... second (or maybe a tie for first) to shooting Woodchucks, is shooting Nutria from an moving airboat!

Especially, if your gun has a three speed transmission!

THEN comes shooting 'yotes!!
