I Need Opinions On Trail Cameras

I really don't live in an area that is conducive to trail cameras but nonetheless have wanted one for quite some time.

I think I finally figured out justification for getting one and need your opinions.

I travel quite frequently and my luggage is inspected by the TSA without question.

Now if I were to place a Trail Camera inside my suitcase, I could finally see who has been rummaging through my personal items.

If I set the camera for a 3-BURST FLASH sequence, I would imagine I would end up with some very entertaining photos.

So I ask… Would this be justification enough for owning one, do you have any recommendations on brand and most importantly… Would I be breaking any laws?

Jay you are one WEIRD cat! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif They would definetly confiscate the camera and give you a full cavity search! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif Let me know how it turns out. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I can't answer any of the questions except if it would be justification for owning one. Heck yes it is, but ya gotta share the photos. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif While you're at it, buy a second camera and stake it out at the skinny dipping hole.

Jay,

As I read your post my thoughts were exactly as Jeff posted above - full body cavity search, by a guy with fingers the size of a bratwurst.

If you're serious, I have a fanatic friend who buys them like I'd buy a box of 22's. There is a particular model that falls in teh $99-$199 range that is a digital and is best described as the cat's meow... I'd have to ask, though.

please ask!!

i am looking for a second one. the digital Moultrie i bought last year NEVER worked right. it is back at the factory now.

If you are serious...and I am not quite sure if I have figured that out yet, I can put you in touch with a friend who has used them professionally on Quail research. One of the guys on our deer lease researched them last year and bought one that I think he is pretty happy with.

He has shown us a butt load of Mature Bucks we never knew exisited on our lease. I can find out what brand it is.

My word of caution to you is that this is a product that you can lose your money on fast. My advice is to do more of what you started here. Ask questions, lots of them from people who are or have used them. The manufacturers will all tell you theirs is the best but the consumer will tell you the truth.

Sure wish I had one now as I am headed off to the Ozarks and always see early morning Fox, Coon and deer along the lake. Will just have to resort to the camera I have and hope for the best. Critters aren't too awfully spooky around all the cabins.

I am serious about brands to look at and those to stay clear of.

BTW.... Jeff... What's it like bro?

I bought mine at wal-mart......... just in time to catch the kids on the block stealing my custom Valve caps, at $25.00 a box this was getting old.........

Should have seen his face as I had it hanging down from a tree,25ft perfect snap-shots 35mm film, double shot one taking the Valve cap-off and a second looking up to see where the flash came from........Priceless /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I dont think his DAD thought it was so funny, the kid was selling them at school.....for there bikes.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Bass Pro has the Stealth 35mm cameras on sale right now for $25 bucks after the $10 mail in rebate. They are hard to beat for that price and you can buy 15 or so of them for what a Cuddeback costs. If you are putting them in a place that has a possibility of theft (just about anywhere) they make even more sense.

You can see some of the pictures these cameras take in the photogallery under the trailcamera pic thread.

I was on high dollar ranch last week and they were using the cheap cameras. He bought a whole case of them at the price I mentioned.

I'm not sure how any of these will work when place inside a suitcase. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Most of them operate off of a passive infrared motion detector. You might get something though. If the film comes up missing, you know something happended. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Jay, if you're serious about the luggage bit, consider buying a WiFi transmitting camera (Nikon has one for about $300) or even a cheap little video spy cam. That way the perp won't get away with it by just stealing the camera, as the images will reside elsewhere. (On your laptop or a WiFi PDA, for instance).

The ultimate trail cam set ups for game cameras, IMHO, are 35mm or 2-1/4 motor-driven film cameras with dual IR beam or laser-interrupt triggers. In the past couple of years, mint used film bodies have gotten dirt cheap, in the rush to digital.

There's more effort and expensed involved in setting up than a ready built trail cam, but the results can be vastly superior to what you get with a PIR detector and el cheapo digital (or film) point-and-shoot.
