How old is your pup? I would never dump a dog out without a tracking collar on. You can get by without a shock collar, but they can be very handy and they can also ruin a good dog. Depends on the guy holding the button! If the dog is a pup, I would HIGHLY recommend you get one of two books, Walk with Wick or Tom Solberg's book Dog Talk. Tom's is my personal favorite, great book on how to train a young coon dog. Read it and follow it's advice and you'll be years ahead of the game. You'll need a good dog house, good containment system, either a fence or a chain, dogbox or kennel to get him safely there and back. Since your in TX you can probably get a nice tracking unit and collar for around $350-$400. You'll save that in gas the first time or two he runs off and you can't find him. Good luck and post some photos and let us know how he's doing.

Tracking collar is a must in the hound world, that is is a guy cares about what he is running. Shock collars, if used right is a great tool. Tracking collars are a bit pricey but believe me they are worth every penny and pays for itself real fast.

Actually Matt on the UKC website I just saw a nice tracking unit and collar, in really good shape for $275. 2 months old, make sure you give him plenty of time to be a pup and grow up. Don't expect a track and tree dog too soon.

ill have to look at that, and Im not even gonna start training him to run coons until hes atleast 6 months old and then even than Im gonna take him easy and just get him used to it

Honestly Matt you should get a copy of Tom Solberg's book, Dog Talk, it is VERY very good for starting new pups. If he has it in him you'll end up with a good hound. Good luck to you!!

if you can afford a garmin astro, get one. they are a must for tracking and they are a great training aid too.if your hunting for coon, them garmin will let you know what your hound is doing out there in the dark. you`ll be able to tell if he`s out hunting or just out there standing around

it would kinda depend on what style you dog hunts as to whether you need a tracking collar..if he hunts close or maybe medium you will most likey be okay..if it is a deep hunting dog not so much.

you won't know till you hunt him.

it can be done, was for longer than has.

If you don't hunt with a tracking unit, eventually you'll use way more gas money looking for your dog then you would have paid for in a good used tracking unit. Doesn't matter how close or how far he hunts.
