Im in the market for a new rifle, im really liking the 22-250 caliber. I was looking into the Savage 11 Trophy Hunter model at a local Dicks Sporting goods and came across a Savage 11 Varmint Hunter rifle sold only at Dicks, i looked up reviewsamd couldnt find a whole lot. Its got a 24" bull barrel and a prettt sturdy stock, the accutrigger and a standard cheap bushnell 4-12 scope on it. My question for you all is there anyone who has experience with that particular rifle? and if so whats the verdict? is it as highly recomended as the other savage models? i just really want to know as much as possible before making a purchase for thag amount of $$$. Thanks

Predator hunting or Varmint? The Bull barrel means weight that you have to tote. Probably in the 10-12 lb range. I am sure that it is a good rifle, but what you intend to use it for may make your choices easier. I bought a Savage 12FV in .204. "Bull Barrel" And while it is a great shooting rifle, it is not a lot of fun to carry around.. just a thought. Good luck.

You didn't say what your plans for the rifle are, but it seems to me that it would be a little heavy for a calling rifle. I know everybody has their own opinion but a heavy barrel is more than I want to carry in along with all the other gear I'm already lugging around. I say put a few dollars with it and buy a good light varminter. Just my opinion for what it's worth.

I plan on using it mostly for yotes, so yeah i would be having to carry it around, it was pretty heavy when held it in the store too. I wish they had the 22-250 in the trophy hunter with the nikon scope on it but that wasnt availiable there. Thanks for the input!

I carried my savage 11 varmint .243 on a 9mile round trip hike with a very steep ascent 4 of those miles along with a sleeping bag and full pack. The gun isn't really heavy enough to worry about in my opinion. Same weight as a sporter howa 1500 (I weighed them side by side)

Model 11 fcns can't be beat in my opinion. I have owned 1 in 223 & now in 22.250 & both shot less than 3/4 at 200yds with handloads & less than 3/8" at 100yds. Off bench & bags. Also bought a bull barrel 223 as my 1st savage & kept it only a few months because of the weight. I am a walking hunter & the fcns shoots just as good as the bull barrel.

I don't own the heavy barrel savage but I do own a heavy barrel Marlin X7 in 22-250. I love the rifle but hate carrying it in the snow and in the hills. I bought a savage 11 TH in 223 and now I hardly bring the 22-250 out for calling unless it is going to be a short trip or something is wrong with the 223 (no problems with it yet, but ran out of shells for it last year when hunting and the 250 had to come out to bat clean up). It mainly does groundhog or other sit and wait small animal hunting. Just my opinion. Good luck!

I agree with the comments stating that the rifle will be heavy and not fun to tote around. I bought a savage 12fv in .204 for a calling rifle. For some reason I just had to have that bull barrel. I did chop it from 26" to 23" but it was still a brick considering I put a laminated wood stock on it. (that didn't help) It might not be so bad with the synthetic but I'm sure you would be more happy with an 11fcns or a 16 weather warrior as they have the sporter barrels with their accustock. Pretty good factory stock makes a "carry-ble" rig...

This is from experience as I didn't listen to the people saying the 12 is a lug to haul around... I just had to have that bull barrel...

I also bought a too heavy callin rifle. a savage 10 predator with the fluted medium taper barrel in 22-250.i am now shopping for something lighter! love the gun once I get to my stand but hate it every step of my way in.

I guess the ability to carry a heavy rifle around is based on the individual. I have the Predator Max 10 w/a big Nightforce scope and it's not an issue for me. I also have a 11 FCNS with the same scope. The major difference for me is that the bull barrels are front heavy when shouldered. That's not as conducive to off hand shooting as well as a well balanced gun is. The 11 FCNS is a very well balanced gun. I use both equally but really appreciate shooting sticks w/ the 10. The biggest difference I see when shooting the two is the fact I can shoot three different weight bullets with the heavier/longer barrel without rezeroing the scope. The sporter barrel on the 11 is a different story. There is a 1.25" drop in POI between the 45 and 50 grain and a 3" drop between the 50 and 55 grain Vmax @ 150 yds. Of course the lighter barrel heats up much sooner and your POI will change after just a few consecutive rounds but that probably wouldn't apply in a hunting situation. I'm not a gun or ballistics guru by any means these are just my observations with the 2 I own. Good Luck and let us know how it works out.
