Ice fishin has come and gone

One week ago today there was about 20" of ice on one of my favorite lakes. It was rotten, soft ice, but still plenty safe enough to be on. Caught 4 of the biggest trout I have ever caught out of this lake on that day. They were some dandies. (Unfortunately the memory card in the camera decided to take a dump and I lost all the pictures of those beautiful rainbows which really ticked me off!)

This was Tuesday of last week(9 days ago).

Tanner caught his own fish(short video below).

Yesterday I made the 90 mile drive and found this.

Even the dog is wondering "What the heck happened?"

Oh well, it was a nice day for a ride and I saw a few critters. Saw 6 massive bull elk together grazing on a hillside just as dawn was breaking. To far and to dark for any pics.

Some bighorn ewes and youngins from last year.

Saw lots of deer. Doe and last years fawn.

Peek-a-boo..... Can you see me?

Cow elk and last years calves.

Saw a few naked trees.

Also saw about 100 or so wild turkeys and one coyote.

Not a bad way to spend most of a day. About 2 or 3 more weeks and the bank fishing should start getting real good at one of my other favorite lakes. Have to teach Tanner all about shore fishing then.

That is fast ice off for sure! I blew it on ice fishing this year. Bought a new pop up shelter, only went one time, never set it up, drilled holes, got sick, went back to my truck, never fished and went home! Worst ice year ever.

Too bad you didn't have a spinning rod and a black marabou jig, I love fishing open water along the ice!

Nice photos, the say was not a waste for sure.

We like fishing early in the year when the ice may have receded into the lake 70-100 yards. have caught some real nice Cuts. then. Last year nothing was happening on the ice and early in the year. From the first week of May through July all heck broke loose!! Limited on nice Cuts. every time out; 18" to 26", ALMOST every one of them.

Fishing was weird last spring here too. Ice out last year was not good fishing. I was at the lake 2 different days when the ice was out about 50 to 110 yards. Fishing is usually very, very good when the ice is out like that. Last year it sucked.

First week of April when there was only one small patch of ice left on the entire lake, fishing got GOOD, REAL GOOD! And it stayed good until the water started warming up in early June. April and May just couldn't of been any better.
