Ideas for bear rug

anywhere from $150 a foot and up around here.

some fixed prices at $1300 to $1500 for 2 layers felt, mouth open, and you get the skull cleaned by bugs.

Sounds about right to me. Honestly I dunno how they can charge twice as much for a rug as they do for a 1/2 mount in my neck of the woods but, they do.

I would use a brown like him, right next to bear and then a tan for the outside to highlight his nose color. 2 layers of felt make it look great.

I'll get better pics of mine for ya. Looks really sharp !

The taxidermist wants to use brown on the bottom and then what he calls rust (which is dark red) for the top ruffle layer. He has one in his shop that looks sharp. I am so nervous because we are spending so much money for this that I want it to be perfect.

They don't do the work themselves. They send the skin off to be tanned, when it returns they do the head work and then send it off again to be made into a rug.

For instance I do euro's for $100 if you bring it by. I charged taxi's $75 to do a euro for them, they charge the customer $250.

So figure about 2.5 times every thing they send off.

For a 1/2 mount or anything else really they only send off for the tanning and then do the rest of the work themselves.

I send them to get tanned but do all the rest myself. Not everybody sends them off to get rugged.Make sure they sew it instead of gluing it to the felt.

To me the one pictured with brown and tan looks too 'girly'.Not because of the color, but the ruffles around the edge.I would tell the taxidermist to cut the backing down until almost the same size as the skin.

Mine is gray on the first layer and black on the bottom. The taxidermist said he'd never do one again for that price though. It's full sheets of of flannel rather than strips. Looks great even after 28 years.
