If you could hunt anywhere...

...where would you go? My hunting buddy has been traveling all over for work and has accumulated a bunch of flyer points. So after a few cocktails he decides that we are gonna go on a 3 or 4 day coyote hunt anywhere in the lower 48 states. We have been hunting yotes for about 4 years in norther lower Michigan, with fair success. Although our numbers only show fair success we have had a ton of fun. We watch all of these coyote videos and can't decide where to go. We will be going sometime between mid-March to mid-April. We are thinking about Globe AZ., but do we won't be there during the PM hunt, so I'm sure with the best coyote hunters in the world being there in January there may not be a Coyote left. But Montana and the Dakotas are also written about all the time.

Any of your thoughts would be appreciated guys. Let me know where we should go. I have learned a lot from you guys over the last year and would really appreciate your feedback.

Welcome to the PM board. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif If I had to pick a really good place to hunt coyotes, I'd go 12 miles south of town and about 4 miles east. It might take me all day to get there as there are lots of spots to call on the way. This spot produced 5 coyotes coming on the run the last time I called it, unfortunately my partner, Mike, who shall remain nameless /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif got excited and started shooting up the area, We didn't kill any. On a quiet night, I still hear them laughing and joking about it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Well, that counts out Canada, which is where I'd like to try.

Otherwise somewhere in the southwest, TX, AZ, NM, or CA. Considering my location though, I do just fine slipping into North Dakota.

Good luck on your pick. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

hmmmm... You lookin' for high volume, ease of calling and shooting, beautiful landscapes, challenging hunts, deserts, mountains? Or What??? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Need more info....

South-central and Southeast Ohio have a substantial coyote population, and thats not too far away either. If you are going to use frequent flyer miles though, I would go to somewhere I wouldnt want to drive to. Just my two cents.

Hey, I don't remember shooting at five coyotes and not getting any. That must me the other Mike. Whew, I thought you were talking about me. Matter of fact, did I even miss the last time I was up? My recollection tells me no. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Mike G.

I am going up to give Redfrog some coyote hunting lessons next November. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Any suggestions on his weak points? I certainly wouldn't want to dwell those areas where he is already an expert! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif LOL!!

Weasel hit it on the head. Although out of state licenses for Kansas and Colorado will run atleast 2 bills. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif Not sure on Wyoming but if I remember correctly it wasnt much different.

I guess we are looking for the highest volume of coyotes at a location with a lot of accessable land. Preferably public land so we don't have to spend a day knocking on doors getting permission. We just want to be able to go out somewhere set-up make some calls and get some coyotes to respond. Where would my odds be the highest for getting a coyote?

I appreciate the other responses, keep'em coming and I'll try to get a concensus.

MichiganMark,

Yep.. The Weasel hit it right on the head in my opinion.

Western Kansas
Western Nebraska
Eastern Colorado
S.E. Wyoming

I lived in Woodland Park CO and Ft Collins too... Loved mountain coyote hunting but it was hard to get used to... The prairie 'yotes were a lot easier.

I'm pretty sure that Wyoming doesn't require much in the way of license fees for 'yotes but am not sure. That might be the natural choice. You could fly into Cheyenne and rent an SUV and head for the national grasslands... Any Wyoming people that can save him some research?

By the way... That's LDHunter not ID... I'd change it but I'd have to have a completely new identity and I'm proud of my "low number". I somehow forgot the caps key when I registered here. Everywhere else I'm LD in caps...

i belive wyoming is free to hunt yotes and a few other things.. check the regs on line.. we have hunted around baggs and there is alot of yotes and much open land.. check regs for night hunting, plenty of pd in the area also.. good luck!! grandpa fudge /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

UH-OH- Grampa Fudge just brought up PD's. Man I didn't think of that. If I go out where there are some PD towns, that could be a bonus. Of course I may have to pack a few more rounds of 22-250.

I think Weasle Ut neglected to mention the best all around spot in the western U.S. Anywhere in the great state of Ut.

North Dakota would be my pick if I were in your shoes. Fly into Minot and head north to Bottineau county. Private land is NOT off limits - it's completely accessible unless posted. The only problem in ND is the fact that you cannot spotlight 'em. If you are not used to, or do not like the cold, then head to a more southern state. But I'm here to tell ya', ND coyotes are primo. I would suggest MT, but you have to get permission from land owners.
Good luck and God bless,
~Scott

I almost said anywhere but Utah, then I realized that there might be a state that sucks worse somewhere. I haven't heard of any that are worse, but I've never hunted Delaware, either.

There are no license fees for coyotes, fox or feral cat in Wyoming. Idaho charges around $65.00?? for non res. No license in Utah. No license in Nevada. Arizona charges a fee for non res. That about covers all the places I've hunted.

sorry guys.no coyotes in idaho?? none between the oregon & utah state line.ok just kidding?? our out of state license fee is $128 i believe.i have heard you dont need a license in nevada though.been thinking of heading that way sometime about 165 miles from where i live.have to leave real early to be there at sunrise.my 2004 oregon license cost $76 good luck.....dave

If it where me I'd head for North Dakota...Forget Colorado. Huge state with very little public land on the east side. What little there is get's hammered, at least by me anyways.
