Impact effect trajectory?

The local range has a 200yd section. It has concrete curbs at 100, 150 and 200 yds. I'd like to set up a target at each distance, making sure the bulls eyes are lined up.

How much will the target the bullet goes through effect the poi on the subsequent targets? The target material is thin cardboard or plastic backboard.

I'll be shooting a 7mm Mag.

Thanks!

Depends on the bullet, I'd suppose. Also, each impact is gonna effect the bullet slightly differently and change the flight characteristics after each impact. Really, there's only one way to find out...

Comparing actual to theoretical. If I'm 1.5" high at 100 where will the bullet hit at 200 (dead on)? Will it be repeatable? I'll be shooting Hornady Superformance 154grn SST. The box says the muzzle vel is 3100fps.

Thanks in advance!

Chronograph your actual load, enter atmospheric info into a good program like shooter and it will tell you. It is not really going to make a difference at such close range. You will almost be splitting hairs.

If you have access to a survey level you could set targets at distance staggered with centers at the same elevation and aim for center to test your drop without worrying about pass through bothering you.

Impacting the targets, even thin paper, is going to have a pretty big effect on the bullets. You might get lucky and it might not destabilize the bullet, but it IS going to scrub off speed, meaning more drop than it should have had.

The easy answer is to set your targets up at various ranges, hold dead on center at each range, and shoot a group at each range (or two, or twenty). If you sight in 1.5" high at 100yrds, and your groups are 1.5" high at 100yrds, then try shooting at 200yrds. If they don't print dead center, then I'd say that rule of thumb isn't accurate for your load.

www.handloads.com/calc enter your BC, MV, and sight in range, and you'll find everything you need to get you pretty dang close. Best part, is that it's free, and it's pretty good for G1 model bullets.

Awesome! Thank you all for saving me the time of having to walk 200yds in each direction only to be disappointed!

I have shooter on my android, need to get a chrony now.

Thanks!

We have used shooter to 1600 yards and it puts you really close at that distance. Have used it at 1000 with first shot hits on targets, just got to remember garbage in garbage out. Give it good information to start with and it will give you a pretty darn good solution. One should always practice and record there dope also in a log to refer back to when shooting distance as well.
