IMR 4064 in the 223?

Has anyone tried IMR 4064 in the 223? I have a good supply on hand, and thought I would give it a try. Working up a load for the 60 gr Vmax. Hodgdon s web site said I could expect 3050 FPS with a compressed load. The rifle is a Encore with a MGM 24” barrel. Accuracy and 3000 FPS are the goal. The load will be used for called coyotes.
Thx.

In all my years of reloading .223 I have never tried IMR 4064. Calling yotes in winter I would expect some velocity loss, how much depends on barrel length, primer used and how dang cold it gets. Give it a go as the Hodgdon data certainly shows promise.

After having some below zero issues with H335, Varget is my go to in .223 and .22-250.

I have and it worked. I used 25 grains of it with the 50 grain bullet. Speeds were not great but accuracy was good. But other powders worked better so that's where I have been.

Varget is the powder I use for my 22-250, and I’m planning on trying it in the 223. It can be a little difficult to find certain powders in this day and age, and I wanted to save my Varget for the 250. 4064 was just a thought, as I have 3 lbs, with no immediate plans to use. I’d like to try Benchmark..... but I’m having a little trouble locating some locally. Thx for the input, it’s very appreciated.

In my humble opinion a lot is based on your barrel twist rate, bullet weight, primer and length of barrel.

Trying to find the right accuracy combination for an AR with a 16.5" barrel, 1:7 twist and a 52 or 55 grain bullet takes some doing - now move up to a 77 grain bullet and it's not so difficult - for most anyway.

I found Varget to be real picky in my AR with 1:7 twist and 16.5" barrel using 77 grain Sierra HPBT Match bullet. Had to be 23.0 grains (not 22.5 or 23.5+) and had to use Remington 7 1/2 primer - the Fed 205M would add 1/2 inch.

If one could be happy with a 2" consistent group at 100 yards - life wouldn't be so complicated and expensive for some of us reloaders.

69g Sierra MK-24-26g of IMR 4064 seems to be a sweet spot for most rifles in the 223.

65g sierra btsp was exceptional with top end load of IMR 4064.

If you have the twist to stabilize heavier bullets I think you ll have success with 4064. It's burn rate is very comparable to Varget.
