IMR 4198 ?

I recently purchased some 40 gr NBTs to try out in my 1:12 twist .223 Rem. I've tried working up various loads with IMR 4198 using several different 50 and 55 gr bullets with less than desirable results. This is my first go at using this light of a bullet in .223 - Do you guys that load the 40 grainers have any luck with this powder?

W748 with the 40's. I have a friend that loves IMR-4198 with the 50's in .223 with .4 average 5 shot groups. So you might want to give it another whirl with a different primer or something.

Russ, I have had good luck with Varget and 8208 XBR with the 40 Grainers.. Ive never tried the 4198.. 8208 XBR has shot well in just about everything I have tried it in..

Thanks guys. I'll load up a batch of 40s with the 4198 and see what happens. I'll give the 8208 a shot too, Kerry. It along with Benchmark has worked great for me with the 50s.

I have a 223 that shoots really well with IMR 4198 and 40 grain Blitzkings. It seems like they were doing about 3700 fps and shooting 5 shot groups around 1/2" and better at 100yrds.

I use 4198 in my short barreled .223's with 40gr. bullets with good results. I don't use it in longer barrels because other powders work better for them.

I use 4198 in my 444Marlin, I have had great luck with H-4895 with 223. I use a charge of 25.5gr. H-4895 with a 55 grain V-Max. This load is through a 20" 1-8" AR.

W748 and IMR-4895 should work.

Just how light must a man go to get a 1-14 twist to shoot?I've never had any trouble getting a 222Rem to shoot the 52gr bullets with IMR 4198.Matter of fact this combo was the hot ticket in short range benchrest(100-300yd)before the 6 PPC. I know the O.P. asked about 223 but the twist vs. bullet wt. issue is applicable to either cartridge.

The 1-12 twist will stabalize all of the all 60g Berger, Hornady, and Sierra bullets, 63g Sierra, 64g Winchester, so the 55-40g weights are all good...I have the 1-12 twists myself.

About 26.0g of 4198 with the 40 should be about right at 3600 fps...start off at 24.0g and work up in two shot groups, and I would use a thick cup primer such as a rem 7 1/2, CCI BR-4, or CCI military primers. CCI 450 have thick cups also, but I don't know how a mag primer will react to 4198.

About 22-23g of 4198 with the 50's is about right.

Good luck!

Brute,
I should have stated in my original post that I haven't used the 4198 in this new rifle. I had tried it in a 1:9 Savage and a 1:10 AR with 50 and 55 gr bullets. The 4198 loads were no where near as good as Benchmark or 8208, so I quit messing with them. The new 1:12 rifle shoots very well with 50 grainers and 8208.

Thanks! I just finished loading some 40 gr NBTs with 4198. My Hornady and Hodgdon manuals showed 22.2 as max, so I started at 19.5 and worked up to 22.0 in 1/2 grain increments. I'll try them out tomorrow.

I gave up on 4198. I had tried about everything I could think of to get 40 and 50gr projectiles to shoot well and was found wanting by the reloading gods. I switched to 8208 and they smiled upon me....as a side benefit, the bore cleaning gods were apparently happy too!

RBoom:

If you tinker a little, I will bet you find a good load with IMR 4198 and the 40 Nosler BT in your 1x12 twist barrel.

Other good powders for the 40 gr. bullet in a 1x12 twist .223 are AA 2230, Win 748 (as noted) and VV N-133.

Also, the Sierra 40 gr. HP is a fine hunting bullet in the .223 and a bit cheaper than the Nosler BT. And, the 45 gr. Speer SP is also a great performing hunting bullet.

Good Shooting!

Thanks man. I've got some rounds loaded with various charge weights. Hopefully the wind will eventually settle down. It's been gale-force here all week.

Well, I headed out into a blizzard today, [beeep]-bent on getting some shooting in. Too much wind, but the 4198 didn't do too terrible...

Here was my best group with 40 NBTs @ 22 gr.

And a few left over rounds with 8208 XBR. (Rifle loves it.)
